snap, crackle& pop!

Hey Guy's I just drove my problem free 78SC down to Cincinatti today to northland Porsche to look at a 79SC for a friend of mine as we drone down from Dayton.. it was problem free she ran great.. we looked the 79 and he bought it for 6500 and it was a strong engine ! but the body needs a bit of TLC.. so to continue my story or long wided question depending on how you look at it. The drive home my car was not runing as snappy as it had on the way down I noticed on start up as well that it was popping at me just sitting at idle and then after we got back to his house I would rev her hard and nothing no popping what so ever.. but the exhaust had some black suit on the inside of the tail pipe which has NEVER been there before .. I have noticed that I need to knock out a V adjustment soon here.. due to a bit of tapping on the right side valves. would this need for a valve adjustment be the cause of my back firing? or should I look at something else as it seemed to just show up .. the car also seem to lack the PUNCH it had as well .. i'm a bit worried but she seem to be running fine right now. but she still seems to lack a bit of snap. in the throttle responce. or is this simply a fuel related problem? please any help would be greatly appriciated. because this is bothersome to me sas the 79 that my friend had just baught semed to be giving me a run for my money on the back roads of Xenia I should be able to out accelerate him easy with few things that have been done to the car... by the way she doesn't smoke of any color on start up and she still doesn't smoke at this time but she just isn't runing quite like she was before I had the popping down in Cinci......??????

My 83 didn't want to behave this morning. Been very humid last couple days and temps are going from 30 to 70 degrees. Pulled the distributor cap and sprayed a little WD-40 in it. Did the trick. You may check your ignition wires also. My 83 has a relay next to the control box under pass seat that controls the frequency valve. With car idling, unplug the relay. If idle note does not change when you unplug relay, replace it.

Sounds like ignition. I am no mechanic, but the symptoms point to it. Someone here will probably know better though. Good luck

Thanks rstoll..
I will try just that as the temp here has been doing much the same. I guess this give a reason to relace the rotor abd cap and get some Magnicore wires... Thanks again!
have a good night.
