Question 911 Gearbox?

I have a 356 replica that has a 5 speed gearbox fitted to it that I was told is originally off a 911. The only markings I've found to date are the numbers 7150638 that are stamped on a flat face on the underside of the box.

I've recently had a problem with the gears jamming so I need to know what I'm dealing with.

Can anyone identify the gearbox from these numbers?

Many thanks for all/any feedback
Ross

Could it be 7190638. That would make it a 901/07 which
you should find stamped further along the bottom rib toward the
front of the car.

Gears would then be 11/34 (A), 18/34 (F), 22/29 (M), 25/26 (s),
29/23 (Z).

715 would indicate a 1975 915 transmission. Look to see if there is a 915 designation near the serial #. Other choices are 911 (1970 & 1971 only), 901 or 902 (1965 to 1969). Post a photo of the side of the transmission.

Thanks guys, my mechanic is in the process of dropping out the engine and gearbox, so hopefully we'll be able to find the other markings once we can get it cleaned and under some decent light.

We finally located the number 915 101 301 OR embossed on the bell housing.

Can anyone tell me the year, which original 911 models it was fitted on, and the standard gear ratios?

Many thanks
Ross

so the 915 part # says it is a 915 transmission, and the serial # says it is a 1975 5-speed
type 915/40
1st – 11:35
2nd – 18:33
3rd – 23:29
4th – 26:26
5th – 28:23
R&P – 8:31

Thumbs up

Hey, many thanks for your feedback.

The road test speeds that I recorded when the car was running match the Pelican 915 spreadsheet calculator almost exactly using the cog ratios you've provided - so it looks like you're right on the money.

Cheers
Ross
