Anyone up for a pre-game fun run this sunday in the san Francisco area?
Hey,
I was thinking that it might be fun to take a drive on super bowl Sunday morning either on the awesome mountain roads of the peninsula, or maybe around mt. Tam in Marin. Kickoff is, I believe 3:30pm on the west coast, so we would have plenty of time to have a blast as well as have more than enough time to get back to our respective parties for pre-game debauchery, and the game. I've never organized a drive, but if there are people interested, I'm sure we can come up with something. I know this us short notice, but hey, we know our afternoons are full, but I don't want your afternoons, I want YOU! Michael |

There's a drive trying to get off the ground in this thread, although I'm not sure if it will be on Super Bowl Sunday or the following week. Post Super Bowl Hamburger Drive - Saturday February 12, 2011 But I'm up for something whatever happens |

Hmmm... I'm not sure of the best route, but there are always good roads once ya start south on 35. Maybe 35 @92, where that parking lot is where you make the left turn on to 35, and down 35 to either 84 or 9. From there, does it hit 1? We could have a nice bit of driving up the coast till we hit 84 again, or if there is someone who know the roads better, there might be a more fun back-roads way back up to 84 where we can head west along it's sweetest spots, meet up at alice's for some food/drinks if they are gonna be open, then back up from whence we came, and stop for a goodbye, and then off on our merry ways.
I have no idea what to expect for traffic. We can start around 9:00-9:15, or if you want, a bit later. I'm up for whatever works out best. Any thoughts? Help? Michael |

You can put me down on the list. Any of those routes sound good to me.

That would be an awesome drive, but I think that is something like a 300mile loop. I'd be up for it probably on another date, but that doesn't mean that I can't drive as far as I want and head back, and others can head on their way.
I'd love to find something that will take a while. I seem to have unlimited endurance for the challenging twists, but I know that not everyone does. Honestly, the loop that was taken on new years days was AWESOME, except that I would have liked to drive a while longer. Maybe we can do that exact loop except with the addition of going south on 35 much longer to 9, find a loop on 9 and it's backroads, then come back up 35 and then head out on to the new years day loop. I really want to drive whatever road that was that started with the loose gravel but then turned in to a "goat trail" type road with all the undulations. I seriously loved the challenge of that one. Here's the other thing. I don't have a GPS, so once we knock out the route, is there someone willing to take the lead (I'll follow - first driver must be fast) and keep us on track? Michael |

I probably can't make it this Sunday, but if I can here's a route that I've taken many times. Canepa's is closed on Sundays so it makes sense to skip Scotts Valley and stick to the goat-paths:
California 92 & Canada Rd, South Coastside, CA 94002 to CA-84 W/La Honda Rd - Google Maps

Steve and Michael
I think best meeting place is 280/92/Canada, as it's just off 280 and pretty easy to get to with more than enough space for everyone to meet. So far both drives suggested are about 125 miles, which is an easy 2-3 hour drive with stops. Mike not quite sure where you're getting the 300 miles yikes!!! I really agree about the drive needing to be longer than the New Years drive, it was fn don't get me wrong, but over so quickly. Another idea, which would be closer for Steve, would be starting in Livermore and driving Mines Rd to San Antonio Rd (130) over Mount Hamilton down to San Jose and then everyone could peel off from there. Now that is a drive with twisties ![]() Another good one is the back roads of Morgan Hill around the reservoirs, over Hecker Pass and then up to Skyline on Old San Jose Rd. Whatever happens, I have my new tires on and need to bed these suckers in, in an enthusiastic way ![]()

I drive that Morgan Hill back road at least once a week. Great drive.
I did a drive just a few weeks ago that might be a good consideration for a future drive. From Morgan Hill, head South on 101 and turn on highway 25 towards Hollister. Keep going on 25 until you reach 198. Head West until you get to San Lucas. Then travel North to Greenfield. Turn West on Elm Ave and travel till you get to Arroyo Seco Road. Continue on over Carmel Valley Road until you reach highway 1. Head North to Watsonville and take 152 over Hecker pass. Thank back to Morgan Hill on Watsonville Road. My odometer showed it was about 225 miles. All smiles.

The Highway 25-Wildhorse Canyon-Metz Road-Elm Ave-Arroyo Seco-Carmel Valley run was a leg of last year's Targa California. Very scenic and lightly travelled, with Baja Cantina waiting at the end... Almost as good as a $15 burger at Nepenthe...

Oh, I forgot about mt. Hamilton. That was one of the first mtn roads I ever drove in my car about 9 years ago. I'm totally down for a bit of a change from the peninsula/Santa Cruz mtn runs (though I still love them).
I actually love the idea of mt. Hamilton. I obviously don't know the roads, and so far I'm not much of a leader, but I want this drive to be one that we all have some input in. As far as distance. New years was probably about 90 minutes short overall, I think. But I could also literally drive all day long. My first motorcycle group ride on my 91 VFR ended up being about 12 hours beginning to end. Mwahahahha. So tell me peeps, hoe about moving It a bit south to the san Jose vicinity. Michael |

I'm up for the Mount Hamilton drive, it would make a change.
Something like this? http://maps.yahoo.com/#mvt=m&lat=37.49687&lon=-121.65863&zoom=11&q1=s.livermore%20ave%2C%20livermore&w0=&q2=Mines%20Rd%2C%20Livermore%20%28Alameda%20County %29%2C%20CA%2094550%2C%20United%20States&w1=37.359242422601255%2C-121.58363342285156&q3=Mt%20Hamilton%2C%20CA%2C%20United%20States&w2=&q4=Alum%20Rock%20Ave%2C%20San%20Jose%2C%20CA%20951 16%2C%20United%20States Of were you thinking more of going South from San Jose? I'm so easy I'll go anywhere Edit hmmm that link is going screwy, the route doesn't include 680! Basically mines - san antonio - mount ham - san jose

K, I'm gonna touch base with Steve and we'll hammer out how it's gonna work out.
My guess is an early start time, and probably as epic as we can make it. I mean, he'll, if I'm gonna organize my first drive, I might as well make it spectacular. Stay tuned for news.... Michael |

I like the drive up to the top of the mtn, but I was also checking the map and there's a road called Kincaid rd. that looks AMAZING. Has anyone driven on that road?
The epic drive that I took down there that time I talke about was AMAZINGLY tight the whole way, it took a while, and I remember that it ended up at some ranch or park or something, and I turned around and went back. I wish I knew what it was. But Kincaid seems like an interesting something something (unless it is not maintained and the pavement it full of potholes). Michael |
