I'm in the market and am curious what to look out for.
Thanks! Kevin |

You might want to try the 996 forum.... air cooled nuts here. I know that the 996's have some common issues but I'm not acquainted enough with these cars to comment. Cheers

RMS & IMS. Check to make sure the 'fix' has been done. If not, youll want to spend around $1500-2000 to get this done

The 99-01 were 3.4 and the 02-04 are 3.6's. Additionally, the 02 and newer have a better oil pump which gives a higher circulation rate. The 99-01's had main bearing oil starvation potential as well if exposed to high side G's (ie: track use with track rubber). If you're looking for a street driver, the 3.4 cars were OK but, at a minimum, you should have the IMS bearing done and replaced with the LN Engineering kit available through Pelican. The RMS is not expensive and while you're in there, replace it as well. Trans has to come out and flywheel off to get them done. The $1000 or so to do it is cheap insurance against an IMS failure or main bearing/oil pressure failure. Then you're looking at $15K for an engine.
