Slow sunroof

I have a 1976 911S. The electric sunroof pulls back extremely slowly. I´m suspecting this to be because I used grease to lube up the sliders.

Does anyone have any idea if this might be the problem, and what the solution might be?

Best regards from Norway.
Glenn

Either drag related or motor weakness.

Did you take the sunroof panel completely out? Then you can clean and inspect the travel mechanism parts. It's not too hard, instructions in the Bently manual I think. Tha't what I did, just cleaned it up in there and it all worked much better.

OK, but if you take the sunroof panel completely out, you can clean the rails a little farther back, too, and you can be sure the slider pieces run smoothly on the track. It's a bit of a puzzle, but not too hard.

Scot, that sounds like a good idea! Thanks;-) Do you know where I can find a description on how to take out the panel? Is there any chance that the grease reached the cables as well?

FYI. Everything I have read on our sunroof is to NOT put any lubricant's on the rail's.

open 3". pop down the headliner in front and slide it back into the pocket. remove the front sliders on either side by taking the 8mm wrench size bolts out. at the rear, rotate the leaf springs inward, off the pins. remove the 7mm wrench size bolts from the rear attachments. slide the lower plates from those attachments inward to remove. raise the front of the roof by hand and lift it out carefully so not to damage the felt seals.

if you want the rails and cables out, unzip the headliner, remove the phillips screws from the cardboard covers if they are still there, remove the two phillips screws from the gearbox and pull it down off the bracket. remove the wind deflector and side rail screws, lift the front of the rails and slide the cables out. pull the rails forward to remove. the plastic guide pin at the back end of the rails needs to be retrieved if it didn't come out with the rail. you also need to put some caulking on the pin on reassembly so water doesn't leak through it's locating hole. later black side rails may have a pop rivet that needs to be drilled out before they can be removed.

@John, Fantastic!!!!! It seams that this is a newer car, but I guess the procedure should be more or less the same.

Glen. The link that John provided is the same one that I referenced when I replaced my seals. I didn't need to do much beyond the seal replacement.
