'89 Carrera washer pump
Hi Folks,
I have a curious conundrum. After digging into a non functioning washer fluid pump, I went down the rabbit hole and found this in the tank intake tube. ![]() This was in the tank! ![]() Ew. The real problem now seems to be the pump. The pump is a simple DC motor, a positive lead and a negative lead. (negative ground is confirmed) The steering column switch passes 12V to the motor as measured by DVM when actuated but the pump does not work. I ran independent 12V + and - to the pump and the pump is fine, pumped fluid right to the nozzles. WTH? I wired my DVM inline between the measured 12V from the stalk switch and the pump. When activated, with the pump connected, my DVM only measures 1.3V coming through! What is causing the line voltage to drop from 12V to less than 2 when the pump is attached? I tried the same thing with another spare working pimp and the same results. Being DC, I assume I'm missing something simple. I've not seen anything like it. Ideas? thx in advance. Mike |

Hi 87m491- On the white stuff... First off, I say you take off and nuke the site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
Having experienced the need for washer tank restoration and cleaning, here's my complete mold story... https://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/987971-weak-washer-system-solved-mold.html I am stumped on the voltage drop, but corrosion is always a first guess. Have you checked to make sure that all connenctions are clean? Regardless, that white stuff looks like it mostly comes out at night...mostly. Good luck.

Mike, try running a separate ground to rule that out as a problem. If the voltage is still low, I suggest the contacts of the switch may be dirty.
