Question Second gear in 915 Tranny

I recently had my transmission rebuilt on my 77 911 2.7L Targa. There is only about 225 miles on it since the new rebuild. Since I got it back it has always been a little more difficult to shift into second gear than the other gears. It seemed to still be working OK until last night. I put it into second and then when I let the clutch back out, it kicked it right back out of gear into neutral. I tried several times with no sucess at getting it into second. Is there something wrong with the shift linkage? I don't know what it is. Any help at all would be great. Thanks!

typically, the problem you describe is the little teeth breaking off the pressed on ring that holds the syncro. they can be found in the drainplug magnet. this allows the syncro to expand and block the shift sleeve. best not to drive it until you inspect the drainplug, because serious damage can follow if the loose items go thru the gearsets. did the rebuilder replace the 1st and 2nd teeth like he should have, or reuse the old ones? sounds like a warranty.

well, it doesn't look good. you'll get lots of suggestions to check the shift coupler in the tunnel, or the shift guide fork in the trans, but my money's on the broken teeth. both 1st and 2nd tend to loose the teeth, so i always renew them on rebuilds, whether they look good at the time, or not. they're just old, and stressed. so pull that drainplug. on rare instances, none show up in the magnet, in spite of being broken, but a little fishing with a magnet on a stick usually nabs a few.

I think John's right; popping out of gear has to mean the synchro ring has nothing to snap into (the undersides of the dogteeth are what the ring snaps into). Time to park the car and get the transmission rebuilt again. Was this a $999 rebuild? Sorry about the way it turned out; maybe it just needs some more new parts and to be cleaned out again. Jim
