Looked at new 911s - now want seat advice
I went out shopping to see how my 6' 4" frame would fit in a 993. I want to do more DE events and am battling the head room problem in my '86 Carrera Coupe. My head rubs the top without a helmet.
I found a beautiful '96 Cab at Claridge's in Fremont (Black on Black with a grey top, 26,000 miles). Obviously with the top down, head room will not be a problem, but with top up there wasn't much difference. So, I have decided to change at least the driver's seat in the '86. I have done some searching on the site and it appears that Recaro SRD's will fit the stock seat mounts? I also saw a reference to Sparcos? If anyone has any advice on how to go about this, I am ready to listen! Also, if anyone in the Bay Area is in the market, there is a sweeeet '86 Carrera Cab at Claridge's. Cream color with Brown leather interior, 46,000 miles - absolutely gorgeous! They have it tagged at $32,900 - If anybody is serious, I would head over there and negotiate on that one - soon!

Recaro's can fit in your car two ways. You need the slider mechanism to be able to move your seat. This bolts directly to the seat. This then can be adapted to mount directly to the Porsche seat supports. You need to do some cutting and drilling. You can also use and adaptor plate that mounts to the supports and then mount this to the slider bracket/seat. The problem with this is that it adds at least another inch. I am 6" and with a helmet on I can manage. My brother is 6 2" and has more trouble. I have the adaptors in my car. In his, we are modifying the sliders to bolt on directly to save some headroom. You will not save any headroom when switching to the Recaro's and sliders. On the factory seats, they were able to better incorporate this into the base of the seat. For aftermarket Recaro's, they have to enble it to mount to many cars.

I too had a helmet clearance problem in my SC. I tried 7 different seats using the stock Porsche slider, side mounted, bottom mounted, nothing worked and I was having sore necks from a long day at the track. I finally bit the bullet and had Frank at Drivers Edge air chisel the slide flanges out of the floor and install an OMP slide and an OMP King racing seat to the floor. It was one of the best things I have done to my car. My butt is down where it is meant to be and I have inches to spare from the top of my helmet to the ceiling of the coupe. When strapped in with a 5 point harness, you become one with the car, DAMN, I can hardly wait until the end of winter. If I was ever to change to another Porsche, I can install my stock sport seat to this slider(not that that's ever going to happen)

Thanks for the advice guys. I just got off the phone with Conversion Techniques in Emeryville. I am going to visit their store to take a look at what they have for options, they do both Recaro and Sparco.
The guy I talked to was really helpful and nice. Has anybody out there done any business with these folks before? JrDavid68 - Check it out - I finally made Senior Member! |

I don't know how the later seats are constructed but my factory Recaros in my '79SC can be easily altered by an uphosterer to give any amount of extra room.
Under my seat, the "seat" portion, the bit where your ass goes, is supported by hemp/jute straps. These just need to be replaced with longer straps and you will sit as low in your seat as you wish. Bill SCWDP south pacific region. |

I like the seats from Ultrashieldrace.com
They are Alum seats at a reasonable price. Some may say that they are safer than tube framed seats.
