Push button start for backup to key ignition
 

Hi All,

Yes - I did a search and found some great stuff on setting up a complex system meant for continued use, but, I have a specific question.

I want to put in a button just as a backup to the 30 year old ignition assembly at a whole. As an emergency system, could I run a switch between the yellow wire coming out of the key ignition assembly behind the dash to the 12 volts on the lighter as a way to trigger the starter? Seems like it would work.

I realize the car would run only if the key is still capable of turning the ignition on - my button would only override the spring loaded position that triggers the starter.

When my switch died and I needed it fixed immediately, I rigged up a push-button start. Not complicated at all, in fact, I keep it in the trunk as a side-of-the-road DIY in case the ignition switch dies again on me.

Basically, you pull the cap off the backside of the ignition switch (you'll see it when you get underneath) then use a jumper wire to figure out which two plug holes will fire the starter (make sure the car's in neutral!) - just keep touching 2 holes together until the starter turns. The run two small wires out of these two holes and attach them to a push-button switch - I found tons of different kinds at the local auto parts place. Tape the wires down onto the sides of the ignition cap, reinstall it back onto the backside of the ignition switch, then just zip-tie the push button to some convenient place under the dashboard. You'll need to turn the key to the last position before firing, so that your fuel pump is running, then the push button will just turn the starter motor. Should take less than an hour, start to finish.

Your scheme would work just fine.

I suspect the complex system you refer too shows an additional relay in the works. In my experience this is quite unnecessary. Without the relay the system works basically as you describe.

True, but a relay insures the source voltage isn't compromised by voltage drop caused by the length of the yellow wire and any corrosive effects by the 30 year connections at the switch and fuse box. Use the battery cable at the starter for source voltage.
