Fan and Housing Colors
Here is a thread containing pics of several folks' engines:
http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=55744&perpage=20&pagenumber=2 Can someone direct me to some other pictures of various color schemes for cooling fans and housings? Someone suggested I re-think putting a glossy black surface on the fan housing. I don't want to paint the fan and housing the same color (at least I think I don't). Valve covers and chain housings will be orangish red, like the engine shroud, and I was thinking red for the fan as well. Any pics or suggestions will be appreciated. You guys are the coolest!

No pics, sorry. But I painted mine with engine enamel, aluminum in color. It came out real well and really brightens up the engine compartment. The aluminum color will better hide any chipping that will inevitably occur since the underlying metal is similar in color. After 2K miles, however, there is no chipping.

Paint it red and stripe it like Eddie Van Halen's guitar.

Pics, anybody? I am now thinking of a duller finish on the black fan housing.

Hey Jim,
Sorry no pics, but just an idea: Use one color for the shroud and fan housing (red), and another for the valve covers and fan (black, blue, green, etc). That might give a nice contrasting "bold" look. |

Super...Leland's pic is clean. Tomorrow I will take a pic of my CIS and give you more to digest. It's 3:11 AM , haven't slept for 28 hours. You are priority as soon as my little brain restarts. I may have some interesting action. It may be worth your time. My red is 1962 356 Ruby Red. Got color from a concours trophy winner. There are 3 different Ruby Reds for 1962. I got the best of them. Not orangy like Guards Red [too femine for me] Ruby is darker/blueish/meaner. More action besides color, please relax, I will not forget, I think.

They have a beautiful bright yellow at the powder coat place. Perhaps red and yellow. I do like cheery engines.
Interestingly, I do not prefer flash for any of the rest of the car. I'd like other enthusiasts be be able to guess that the car is tracked, etc., but I prefer to drive a sleeper. A wolf in sheep's clothing. When I'm done with this rebuild, I might have 210-220 hp, but it will looks like a stock SC with a fire extinguisher. The silliest way you can treat a car is to make it look like it'll go 300 mph, but forget to use any performance parts. IMHO. But again, what's under the hood is a different matter. I like 'bright and cheery' there.

Super.. I have pictures of the Ruby Red that I don't know how to post because they have to many K bits. I like dark reds like Ruby Red. It may have a connection with what my bride's best friend has called me for 25 years, "you are a Neanderthal". I think it's great that you are so developed that you can express your sensitivity, your socially consciousness, your well roundedness, your feminine side. Ruby is bright red. Just let me know your e-mail, I'll look for it on this BB when I finish the last of my BS. The most beautiful/class/striking/exciting of the reds you may prefer is the Ferrari red. There is many Ferrari reds. I helped pick the best of the Ferrari reds with a friend. He won't get home from work till tonite [ NY time] to get you the part number. The guys at the Ferrari dealership also feel it's the best red that we picked. I may be to much into "over kill", but that's my problem... The Ferrari red makes Guards Red look humble/cheap/low class.

Started downt his road a while back and ended up passing on the powder coating, not sure why. I did find out that the Aluminum paint from Griot's is a damn good match for the fan once you get all the gook off of it. I didnt polish it to a shine, just nocked off the grunge and the color's are identical. You can get their paint on their clearance page for about 3 bucks. Also bought some of thier satin black for my Fuchs which is a VERY close replicate of the finish on my wheels..(also on clearance). They say that their paints are German (hmmm) who's to say, but the spray nozzles are definitely higher quality than the average Orchard paint can..

Those Griot's paints are good because they are rebadged Wurth paints.
Just like the rebadged "BMW" and "Mercedes" wheel paints you get that the BMW/MB dealers. Still, no matter how good a spray paint (and Wurth is the best), it won't last for many miles on the fan, no matter how you prep it. Also, there is truth to Ferrari red making Guard's red look a little bad. Guard's Red looks "red" when it stands alone, but when you put it next to Ferrari "RED", Guards looks kind of orangey. Not the deep, blood red of Ferrari. |

Jim T...IMO, you got it mostly correct. The Ferrari red, the best red of many F reds, is/looks like pure real natural red. You can see only a very slight "orange" in it in full sunlite and only when comparing it next to a real blood look like Porsche Ruby Red. The F red is so beautiful that I think [sometimes] that Superman is not only worthy but "it is" the red that will get him excited. I'm waiting on a part number of the best F red color. Even though the P Ruby Red is bright, the F red is an artist delight.
And yes that fan sees so many chips waiting to happen the logical answer is that a natural silver or clear is probably the best way to go, IMO.
