Anyone know this car?

I am going to have a look at it tomorrow.

http://newyork.craigslist.org/wch/cto/3940476024.html

What I know: 77 with a stock 3.0 from an 84 donor. G50 trans. Work on the motor and trans done at Rennwerke in NY. Seller encourages me to speak with the folks at Rennwerke about "Juan's white 77". I guess it has a relatively new interior. Must be just the seats cuz the carpets look like crap.

The wide-body conversion (metal) was in mid-project stage when purchased by the current owner, who had it finished.....by who, I have know idea. I asked him about the picture of the nose where the smile appears to be off a little. He says its the picture, not the car.

I hate the wheels, interior and whale tale. If bought, they are the first to go!

Anyone have any thoughts or comments about this car, the G50, or the 3.0? I know about the fixes needed on the 3.2, just not sure about the 3.0.

Are there any specs I can use to measure / confirm that the wide body was done correctly?

Thanks all!!!
Shenton

77 with a ... G50 trans = chopped up unit body

inspect carefully!

besides why get a G-50 when you can luxuriate in the anachronistic baulk ring swimming pool of Porscheism?

I didnt see where the ad says G50 and I dont see why someone would go to the trouble of installing one on a na 3 liter motor, when a bolt in 915 would be more than adequate. To install a G50 you would need to cut the torsion tube and run full coilovers with tied in cage. (Major mods needed, old school way) or find a short bell housing version with all the other Patrick Motorsports components. Probably an 8,000 conversion. Usually people only do this upgrade when they need a gearbox strong enough to handle the torque of a big 3.6 track car or a turbo. Its not something that you would forget to mention in your ad. Its probably just a 915 car, but if it really does have a G50 you need to find out which way they did it.

I though all 1984 911's were 3.2? Lots of things about this car just don't add up. Tread very carefully!

How did I miss that? Correct.... 84 donor would have the 3.2 with a 915.

It sounds strange. 3.0 would be earlier than '84. I don't see G50 in the ad either, and if from the '84 donar would have been a 915. 3 grand and he claims a rebuilt tranny, exhaust, and electrical. I think it would have cost more if all this was done.
Personaly, it is not to my taste. I also think it would cost quite a bit to fix it up, would be cheaper and easier to buy an SC. Long term value would also be better.

"Got a sweet driver. Swapped out the factory 2.7l junk and replaced it with a fuel injected 3.0
Rebuilt 5 speed tranny. Full wide body conversion done with BBS wheels. Alpine white in color. This car is a mahor head turner and a blast to drive. Just got back from Rennwerke in Elmsford and had a ton of work done. About 3 grand worth. Full exhaust. All new electrical. It is Not a showroom car so please dont think that. If it was an original show car the price would be double. Only 68k miles on the car. Exterior is an 8.5 Interior is an 8.5. Super nice car. Ready to go no junk here!! Just painted this winter! Please call for more details if you wish"

the ad says nothing about the year of the motor other than it is a 3.0 And it says 5 speed; no reference to a G50. If you like the body style and the rest of the parts that appeal to you, call Rennwerke and get their opinion before you spend on a PPI ( a MUST do step before you spend the $$)

it has a nice 3.8 RSR thing going for it, so keep your fingers crossed that it checks out

Who knows, it may be a pretty nice car when checked out.

good luck

I wouldn't have looked twice at this junk.

WALK AWAY AND FORGET ABOUT IT.

I can see why you like it tho..."its a mahor head turner". With the "factory 2.7l junk tossed out"...

Scary, but...
The shop is top notch. Very high quality work is done there. As a matter of fact, one of the pix in the ad is from the interior of Rennwerke.
I would give them a call and see what Cheech says(the shop owner). It sounds like to me the advertiser doesn't know what he's talking about. It's only a phone call and Rennwerke has a great reputation.

Body looks ok, but there are definite issues, like the rockers appear to be molded into the body, same with the front fenders. This will be problematic if you ever need to adjust the T-bars or remove a fender and something about the front bumper fitment just doesnt look quite right. The interior is horrible and I dont see how the seller can call an interior lacking door panels an 8.5 out of ten. Main concern is the drivetrain. For 20 grand I could find an awesome unmolested mid-year car.

reminds me of a "conversion" I saw a few years ago. That car was junk. The picture looks OK but I believe you will find lots of problems. As others have said a G50 and a 3.0. It just doesn't add up. Almost sounds like someone collected all the buzz words about that series 911 and "willed" them into the car. Let us know how it checks out.

This has been for sale for a while. I have been looking for a month and know I've seen this on CL. Generally a month for a car isn't too long but for 911s in this area that's about 4 times above the average.

Thanks all,

Gonna call cheech and see what he says. But still...I'm getting cold feet on this one.

Seriously considering buying a good 16-20k car (narrow) and enjoying it for a season, then doing a conversion myself. Or....waiting and letting the budget increase a little and popping on a factory wide body car...

Thanks for all the input!

Shenton
