Painting a front valance: Textured Finish?

What is the best way to duplicate the factory textured finish on a front valance?

My '87 has 100% original paint, but the lower front valance has suffered some curb scars. I'd also like to replace it with the earlier style without the fog lights. I'd like to come as close as possible to duplicating the original finish, but it doesn't look like an easy task.

Any suggestions?

You need Wurth undercoating, an air compressor and an applicator gun.

Works like a charm. I will find the applicator gun and post a link. Here is info on the undercoating.

Here is the gun - I used the one on top.

When I first got my car, the valance was a huge mess. I removed it from the car, cleaned it, and then sprayed a couple coats of that black rubber undercoating/bed liner stuff that you can buy from a local auto parts store (and it comes in a rattle can). I let it dry thoroughly (a good week) then primed and painted. It looks good enough for me and is holding up.

Does the Wurth Undercoating go over primer? Do I then need to prime before painting?

Funny: I was just getting ready to repaint my front valance. Im going a different route- stripping it to bare metal, filling the fog light holes and then paint it to match the rest of the car. Smooth. No texture.
That said, Frinkfrogs came out pretty nice and doing texture would help hide any evidence of filled holes. Hmmmmm.........

Wurth Stone Guard and Wurth Undercoating are 2 different textures. The Stone Guard is closer to what was originally used, the undercoating is.......well undercoating. It has crevices in it and does not 'build' like the Stone Guard. I don't know if I am explaining it right but you can see it in the picture above, not knocking it, it looks good. Just making an observation based on my experience.

Super DAve. Good input. I bought my stuff from Car Care Online and the guy there directed my purchase. It very well may have been the stone guard.

I can't find the stone guard in PP. Here is a link to the spray product that has preparation discussion. No mention of bare metal. I would prime afterward for paint adhesion.

This is exactly what I want to do to my RUF Clone front valance.. It's a black polyurethane unit.. Any additional comments/ procedures/sources would be greatly appreciated.. I've talked with a couple local 'reputable' body shops and don't seem to want to be bothered.. TIA

Neel - I would just do what sailchef did then have it painted.

I bet PP has it if you call them.

As to procedures, make sure it is clean before spraying and then let it sit for several hours. Practice on a piece of cardboard. It is way easier than spraying a fender with paint to get the finish you want.

Here is the non aerosol product:

this is what I used on my 930 when I eliminated the fogs. You can vary the thickness/pebbles by the application set up time.
no one has ever said - hey, that not Wurth!

Bob, thanks for the advice.. I'm looking for black Wurth Stone Guard in a rattle can.. I searched the PP site, then the 'net.. Wurth website is about useless.. I called our host, very helpful as always.. PP doesn't have black.. I'm also concerned about compatability issues with the polyurethane valance.. Jason at PP tried to find that information for me, but could not.. Any Ideas?? Where to buy??
I may try spray undercoat on an old poly bumper first, to see how it turns out..

Neel,

After checking Pelican I bought some Wurth Stone Guard (spray can) at goodspeedmotoring.com. Lots of Wurth products.

I do something a little different on my lower panels and in my wheel wells. I spray everything on the Bottom with Truck Bed Liner. It has a Very Tough finish and will handle the stones and sand blast at higher speeds and covers a Multitude of Sins

Another thought is to strip, repaint close to regular body gloss finish....and have the clear 3M type stoneguard stretched over it.......

Neel - The stone guard stuff is water based.

I like Vincent Hills idea.
