911 slantnose headlight motor

Hey guys,

Kinda in a bind. My 1978 911 slantnose headlight motor on the passenger side just decided to stop working. It is getting power but just does not work. I for the life of me can't seem to find one. Will a 924/944 headlight motor from the same year or above work? Can someone point me to the right direction give me another option to try. I am at my wits end here. I have heard that you can convert to newer motors from other makes. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Factory slants have one motor in the middle of the trunk.

Since you have 2 motors it's an aftermarket slant kit.

RX7 headlight motors were a common option.

You should pull the motor and look for any part #'s or manufacturer names/logos.

Scott is right.

Ebay has tons of them. They are year and passenger/driver side specific. As suggested get the version # off the unit and contact the vendors or Mazda so you can hunt for the proper years.

Here's one for $9.00 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7927232532&category=33710

I think most of the aftermarket slant nose conversions used the Mazda motor. At least that what my shop told me.

99% of the conversions used Mazda motors as indicated byScott.

I have had the round mazda mtrs stop functioning twice and both time it was the relay not the mtr. The easiest way to get at the relay is to pull the accordian bellows on that side. If it has a rubber boot leave them on. they just unplug and you plug a new one in. The are avaiable from a Denso (formally Nippondenso)
parts dealer. If you have trouble finding one pm me and I will look up the source I got mine from. Don't go to the Mazda dealer they want over $100.00 each.

Keith,

The relay may also be located in the forward area of the trunk.

I wondered myself about if it is the relay or the motor. I really have no way of knowing. Since it appears mine is aftermarket, both my motor and really are located in my light cavity. According to 3.2 CAB (Thanks!), I need a pre-86 assembly Mazda motor. Just to make sure, the writing on the motor is "12v WR-2 Mitsuba Japan". That is all I found on it.

Let me ask this: Does my driver side also have a relay? If so could I unplug it and try it out on the other side? Would I create any problems?

THANKS to all that have posted!

Yes skijaker, try to unplug the driver side relay and test. Most of the time its just a bad relay as stated above.

here is my thread....

I am HEl_l_ bent on making my own factory pop ups. I have some S2 lights coming in with bar and motor. I have Miata light motor, RX7 motors,... I will study anything I can get my hands on to fix this prob that plagues all us poor non factory slantnose owners. I plan on figurign this out to make a complete kit to be virtually indistinguishable from factory. I have received snide comments from non-believers trying to keep me down, but I work in Automation alley in Detroit and there isn't anything I can't have easily made. I just have to figure out what the originals looked like... that is the hardest part. I have 1 light down, too. AND I REFUSE to fix it until my factory kit is ready to go in The RX7 linkage sucks, the lights flutter and they aren't worth putting another dime into.

I just had mine fixed. My motors were from a 85 RX7, and a later motor is a little different. The relays were ok, but inside the motors, under the round black cover is three copper lines, where the motor goes around. One of the diodes was bad and prevented a complete circut. Also, the arms that attach to the cover are different on some years. We had to fabricate a new one. But they now work, so far so good, but if Mr. bch ever gets his kit, I might buy one and do away with mine. My Mazda dealer wanted 700.00 per motor, but nothing in a junk yard.

COUGH!!! 700 per motor. Holy Toledo. What do they think you have, a Porsche?!!

Seriously, I have the motor coming, and if I can get enough info, I will make it work for all of us. I cannot even describe how much I hate driving this car at night because of these headlights....

***I would be willing to compensate anyone with factory stuff if I could borrow parts or if you are close enough to measure what you have. ****

For the life of me, I can not find the relay on the drivers side. However, I did unplug the relay on the passenger side, cleaned it and reinstalled it with the lights on. I made a clicking sound every time I plugged it in. I did this 3 to 4 times and the same happened each time. I take this to mean the relay is working but that my motor is dead. Any thoughts???

As for the $700 motor, someone must have been smoking crack!

mr.bch, take a look at an early to mid 90, I think, Isuzu impulse, they operate a single motor setup like the factory slantnose. the one motor in center with the thru bar that goes to each side to open each light. I have done extensive research on this topic also. I also thought about going to a single motor type setup, but mine work great, and I have bought every spare motor I found just to make sure, i will always have a motor if I need replacements. The last set I found cost $5.00 for the 2 motors, with relays and everything else. There are other than mazda motors that will work, just some very minor mods to be made. The way my were made they do not have any wobble or bounce when they are up or down, very solid.
shijaker, glad I was able to shed some light on it for you.

skijaker, have you tested the input power lead at the motor, to see if you are getting power from the relay? If the power input lead is getting power, it might be the motor gone south, or it could be an internal part of the motor that is bad, and could be replaced, instead of the entire motor. What part of the country are you?

Shijaker,
I found the cover to one of the old relays that denso could cross for you the nippondenso part # is 056700-5950. Look around like I said for a Denso auto parts dealer, I bought mine from a Truck parts store.

3.2 CAB, I live in East TN (Sevierville, Gatlinburg area). I will check the voltage going to the motor and see what I get. Kepperly, thanks for the cross reference point. I found a relay that didn't match the other one. It was located in my trunk, not in the headlight cavity. I will trace it today. It doesn't look the same but I will trace it and if it was a cross part.

3.2 cab, that is interesting that yours do not bounce. I think every aftermarket slantnose person on this board is green with envy. I'll assume that yours do not look like mine? Any chance you have some pics?

When I bought my 911, the headlights did'nt work, When I pulled my healight switch, I heard a "click" from my aftermarket relay. I thought it was bad, but after a check, it was ok. It did'nt look that good, but it worked. Hang in there, buy some old Mazda motors, and see what happens.
