How 'correct' is the AGLA steering wheel recovering kit?

I have a three spoke steering wheel that needs to be recovered, and I've purchased the AGLA kit from our host with the intention of doing the work myself. I'm a little worried that the leather provided by AGLA is not a good match for the factory steering wheel leather. The AGLA leather seems to have a lot more grain. I'm sure it would smooth out to some extent when stretched around the wheel, but I'm concerned that it still won't look and feel right.

Can anyone comment on how correct the AGLA kit looks? I have searched and found a few photos of wheels with the AGLA cover, but in most cases either the photos were poor or the intallation was poor.

Thanks,

I'm happy with the look and finish on the one I did for my SC.

Your assumption about the grain stretching/smoothing out is correct.

I did my install over a couple of evenings and got acceptable results. If I did it again I would glue the cover at each of the 3 spoke ends and go back after it was all stiched and trim the leather the way it was done originally. Right now the leather on mine is just streched tight over the ends.

Good luck with yur project, Cooper

I re-wrapped an early four spoke a couple of years ago, cover purchased from AGLA and your assumption is correct, the grain is not near as smooth as OEM and it does not flatten out upon install. It seems that the correct type/grain of leather for these is hard to find. A few people have implied that they have found some but haven't revealed their source. It is my understanding that even the high quality upholstery shops aren't correct on the material.

David-

Does the new AGLA cover for the four-spoke go overtop of the old original cover or do you strip off the old cover first?

Steve, the cover I had would have easily fit over an existing one. When I sewed it I felt it could have been a bit more snug, the leather is plyable, also you'll need to tuck the ends under at the spokes or they will be too long.

Thanks David. I've been wanting to get this kit recover the wheel, but I didn't want to put a new covering over my old one. It is good to see that yours worked out well.

Thanks for the feedback David. If that was a photo from when you performed the recover, do you have any shots of what the wheel looks like now? I'm wondering how the leather is wearing in.

I would say just the opposite.... it would be GOOD to add a new cover OVER the old one to get a (sort-of) RSR wheel....the goodness of a larger 380 mm diameter of the stock wheel but the "fatness" of an aftermarket wheel ( usually limited to no-bigger than 350 mm).

I always wondered if the AGLA kit can be fitted over an existing wheel w/o removing the old cover. Seems from answers here that you can. Thanks.

Graham, sorry no current pics, sold the wheel and replaced with an OEM extended hub unit, VERY cool BTW.

Will, if I install another cover I wouldn't hesitate to put it over a "snug" fitting original, that added width would feel nice.

I think it depends on the wheel/individual cover.

I've done 4-5 of them over the years on Porsche wheels (SC and Carrera), and one on a BMW sport wheel around a year ago), and I found them to all be very good quality.

There's no way in the world any of mine would have fit over the old leather, though. I thought about trying that to try to get a thicker "sport" type look adn feel, but after testing it out, there was no way in my cases. Even with the old leather stripped off, they were still pretty darn tight.

I am fitting an AGLA cover on my 71 wheel, right now. No way would it fit over the old cover.

Regards,

Al

They have cover that replaces the original and a version that goes on top of the original for a thicker grip, like the RS/RSR wheel. I have done a couple of 380mm RS/RSR wheels from original 914/6 wheels.

AGLA?

Utter and complete garbage. Not to mention some of the WORST customer service I've ever had.

After waiting 2 months to get a steering wheel cover kit from Alan at AGLA, it turns out that he mailed it to the wrong address and the USPS sent it back to him. That's after several emails/call exchanges where he assured me that he had mail two others to me - this last one being the only one with any tracking info.

Tired of waiting, I email him requesting a refund. Instead i get a sob story about his son being sick the past three weeks (what happened the 5 weeks before his son got sick?). And he is too small a business to issue refunds.

So, I have made a claim with VISA - let them deal with him.

DO NOT ORDER FROM ALAN AT AGLA!

Why did you order through AGLA? I bought my kit from Pelican and received it promptly as usual (though I haven't installed it yet).

I didn't know that Wayne had them. Now I wish I did.

Dealing directly with AGLA has been a nightmare. But I guess I'm not alone.

Is this something I can do myself? A buddy of mine bought me the cover several years ago for a birthday gift, and I haven't yet summoned up the courage to try the install myself. Is this a horrible job?
