Tell the Green Police to back off.
For all you poor folks who have to contend with the smog Nazis (esp you Cali guys) here is an interesting study.
So glad I don't have to deal with this here in Massachusetts; the politics are bad enough! HVA Monthly Newsletter

You mention 'smog Nazis,' then link to a report showing how air quality in the U.S. has improved over the last few decades - presumably due to pollution controls on vehicles and industrial sources. So I'm not really sure of the point you're trying to make.
There was really only a relatively brief period - roughly between 1974 and 1981 - when pollution controls on vehicles were seriously debilitating to performance and economy. Since then we've seen gains in both (especially performance) while keeping emissions low. I know not all pollution control regulations are perfectly sensible, and arguing for a break for those '74 to '81 owners might be reasonable. But I don't get the Nazi bit.

Ok maybe nazi was a little strong. It's great that cars built late 80s up are doing a much better job of reducing pollution.
My issue is chasing down collectors who drive their cars very little contribute very little to pollution. I worry that the same over the top greenies are the same ones that will eventually force buy backs on classic cars. I believe we should do all we can to reasonably reduce pollution.

What he is trying to say is that here in California the smog people have gone overboard on older cars like Porsche and others when many of us with classic cars only drive a few thousand miles a year. Yet the tests they do are getting more strict every year. In a few years for instance A a rebuilt 1985 911 will barly pass the California smog test even with all new parts. What is also not fair is that if you have a 1972 911 it requires no smog check but puts out far more smog that say my 85 Carrera. And there are still thousands of those cars out there on the road. That is what he was trying to say but I think you already know that. Nick

Thanks for the support Nick. Had to keep it short cause I'm responding from my phone on the train.
See I am being green in my own way!

No Problem. Here in California it's all about money and where they can get it. The green part is pure bull. Folks with classic cars tend to take great care of their cars and drive very little. Nick

California had the rolling 25 or 30 but since it is the very worst shape with no money they have to steal from car folks . They are smog dogs! Nick

Lots of interesting points that can be made here, but the one I like is to look at how much cars have been cleaned up and how little the electrical generation business has been cleaned up, yet they want to expand the use of electricity (It's so greeeen) to charge cars!
Not too many politicians went to engineering school. Take care with the epithets, we are all supposed to be more civil you know.

(Maybe if they were accomplishing something their smelly emissions would stop but it has never happened in human history...) I've been wondering. (Any CA or relevant lawyers chime in here) - Shouldn't older cars be automatically grandfathered in with the emissions limits that they had when they were new? This whole bit where they decide to regulate us to a standard that they weren't designed to smacks of a class action opportunity. - Does anyone know if there was actually a change to the law or is this just a case of CARB regulating any way they see fit?

Or you can move to Indiana. My location in southwest Indiana has no smog checks at all.
You can do anything or nothing to your car and merrily drive on. David

I am wondering when they are going to make race cars run emission equipment. Imagine a modern F1 car or Nascar having to pass smog to be able to race ! More rules !!! whoo hoo...

I called the Cal smog people and asked why they changed the baseline on older cars like my 85 carrera? He told me that they add a bit more restrictions every year to make up for wear! Really! That is what he told me! If you rebuild your motor it will still be hard for a 85 3.2 to pass Cal smog. Why make it harder? If a car does not pass it will not pass. They want cars off the road. It is all for money because there is no money in every major city in the USA. And Cal is the very worst off. All for money. This is the truth Nick

My '86 is due for a check in a month. I'm pulling out all the stops. Install a rarely used cat from a friend, dump a can of crap in the gas tank that you buy at pep boys "guaranteed" to make you pass smog, show up at the smog place after a HOT run to heat up the cat.... What am I missing? JB
