honing alusil cylinders
for everyone who asks about finishing alusil cylinders check this link out Honing Options for Hypereutectic Aluminum Cylinder Bores - Sunnen after reading this i find its ok to rering but i would recomend just scotch brite pads for cleaning and making a hatch pattern for oil but thats just me. dont just take my word for it weigh the odds yourself.

OK but for a virgin re-builder I have questions:
I am just starting the rebuild process on my 200,000 mile 911 SC (1983). I have read a lot of the materials on the Alusil cylinders, and still plan to re-ring. I also went to the 3M site and found there are many choices. My question is"Which Scotch Brite Pads work the best?" Second question is "What are the steps?" do you wash them with a degrease detergent then rinse in water? Do you follow up with motor oil? What is th best procedure? Are there any statistics on failed Re-Ring Alusil? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Michael |

When I did mine, I used the red scotch brite on a three pad hone. I then washed them in solvent, then hot soapy water (dawn dish soap), dried with air, then wiped them with Gibbs Driven break-in oil on a paper towel. I then used the break-in oil for the first 500 miles and we did a cold leakdown and it showed only 2%.

I have a 79sc and re-ringed Alusil cylinders about 5 yrs ago, the rings never really seated (6k miles), I used scotch brite and honed with Sunnen AN-30 paste on felt pads. I ended up pulling it all apart after a few DE's and upgrading to 98mm cylinders.
There's a great thread in the rebuilding forum on re-ringing Alusils...more information than you can possible imagine. As many have said re-ringing Alusils is a bit of a crap shoot. If you plan to do the work yourself and you have time then it may be worthwhile (you won’t be paying pull it apart again if the rings don’t seat). Good luck, Stu |

Thanks for input.
When the honing process was completed, did you notice a color change?? Thanks |

I see no advantage to re-ringing Alusils but that's just me.
I measure everything before I make any decision. If the cylinder in question is Alusil and it's past it's wear limit then it's a core. The rings that Alusil's come with are very hard and usually out last the cylinders anyway. Why add wear to a cylinder when it's getting near it's wear limit by re-ringing?

That makes sense, and that is my plan. If it is at the end of the specs, I will replace them. If in specs then need to decide. I am a few weeks from that decision. \\
Thanks Michael |
