When do you replace pillows?

So I'm embarking on changing my transmission out and have never read anything on changing out the trans mount pillows or engine mount pillows. I know my engine mounts were changed out 10 years ago (25000 miles) and prolly still good. the trans is an unknown upgrade so when does one consider changing out the pillows so the trans/engine movement isn't excessive?

Also, WEVO has blue pillows and black pillows. Blue is for race and black is for street/track. There are also OEM club sport mounts. Are the midline mounts noticeably different from stock?

Anyone with first hand experience for a mostly street car?

:confused::confused::confused:

Pillows? okey dokey then...

anyway, most will last at least 100K miles, especially on a street car.. The race ones are simply stiffer and you feel more vibrations, but less drivetrain movement.

i replaced using 4 sport mounts for street use

Joe, if you still have the 901 transmission, then you need to change the entire beam with the mounts, or exchange it for a WEVO setup.

This made a world of difference.

Here is an innovative approach to replacing the mounts in an early 901 transmission bar:

Tom,

I am transplanting a 915 and have the 915 support with crappy old mounts now so its time to update.

I realize the full race mounts add vibration to the chassis so I was thinking Hayden wevo's semi sport pillows would add a little more powertrain stability w/o more vibration at idle.

In order of "Stiffness"..... stock...then Porsche "sport" mounts ( aka, cabriolet), then the Wevos you mention, then full metal. Full metal not advised for street use due to transmitting vibration, etc....

personally i always like solid mounts in the rear and sport mounts on the tranny.......
it's a sports car, it's supposed to have some vibration :D

ericwitte 03-03-2011 06:36 PM

Just make sure you tighten the bolts! ;)

Which of the Wevos are you referring to? They have two different levels of hardness, no?

Any side effects if put on my Targa, how can I tell what I have now?

I know they are all brand new but I do not recall if wrench gave me an option to upgrade.

The Cabriolets came with what we consider "sport" mounts to help with body flex.I don't know if Targas did, however.

About the only way you could confirm is to find the part number, either on the mount itself or maybe on the receipt.

My thiinking is that any elastomer in the "System" will absorb some of the vibrations...and if there are 2 different hardnesses ...or thicknesses....then they just line up on the sliding scale in their appropriate places from stock to full-metal.

Full metal allows no movement of the trans and engine, and will likely allow more precise shift action too, espcially as the chassis is "in-corner" and twisted to some degree. The hard part to analyze with full-solid mounts is the possible destructive vibrations that come thru to various pieces in the car at some point in time.....meaning...when and where?. It's not just a "sporty" feel that you are introducing.

I changed out stock transmission and engine mounts for Wevo black (softer) pillows on my SC. Candidly I was surprised at how much more noise and vibration these transmit over the stock units. IMO unless you will see considerable track time, stay with stock.

RWebb 03-04-2011 11:37 AM

as to "when" - my guess is that they will get hard like all rubber, so maybe every 10 to 20 years

as to what - you can get intermediate levels of stiffness by using softer mounts at the trans, stiffer ones at the engine -- so you have about 8 levels to play with (Collect them ALL!)

Right now I have the sport mounts at the engine and 40 year ols stock ones at the trans. I know that Richard Parr from PMO had conferred with Hayden @ WeVo about making his race mounts just soft enough so the vibrations wouldn't cause problems with carbs which is known to happen.

I'm sorry to hear the black mounts cause excess vibration in your SC. My Targa has more than enough vibration from the poly bronze bushes all around so I'm not sure if that would be much worse running 2 WeVo blacks and 2 sports.

Question is Randy, what position would be best?

Blacks in the front for optimum shifting precision, and sport in rear?

or vice versa to keep engine more secure where torque is applied?

RWebb 03-06-2011 06:15 PM

yes, the moment arm will be longer if the rear is used

report back when you do the double-blind tests -- do 10 each way and I'll run some stats. on it...
