? about timing chain
Im currently trying to pull the heads off of my 2.4L so I can have the valves done. I do not have the required tools to pull off the camshaft sprocket. Is it possible to undo a link and keep the cam-housing and heads together and let the machine shop worry about it. If so, what is the best way of doing it, anjd how to do it with out damage.

it's hell sometimes trying to do some of this stuff a home. if you already have the "link style" replacement chains, you can disconnect the link. otherwise you will have to grind the little tits off a link so it can be removed, then replace the chain later with a new link style. then the chain housing can be removed along with the heads and cam towers. or go buy the cam holder and 46mm socket and breaker bar you will need to reassemble the stuff.

What you might want to do is call the machine shop first before you bring in the whole assembly. They may not like it if you give them the whole assembly.
If I remember when I did my chain assembly, I slipped the chain over the cam gear with the nut tightned down. I used a flat ( 1/2" W X 6"L) blade to work the chain on the gear. You could make a ring out of thin metal (similar to a collar) to fit around the cam gear to keep the chain off the gear and then try to work it off. I think the chain will have enough play in it to slide it over the face of the cam gear. Steve |
