Chime on in. Its engine rebuild time.

Ok I am getting a workshop to rebuild my 3.0L. Any advice from previous experiences perhapshttp://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat1.gif

Do it yourself;)

targa4me 02-10-2002 04:56 PM

Great.. that really fills me with confidence.

Brian993 02-10-2002 05:00 PM

Have you done any mechanical work before?

targa4me 02-10-2002 05:14 PM

Yes when I was younger I rebuilt a Triumph Spitfire. I also had a few dirt bikes I used to work on. But I have never done a bottom end.

The engine has already been dismantled for inspection. (not by me)

Not much since then

If it were me (you've heard that before I am sure) and I had the money, I would pay someone. As long as it had a good warranty, I would definetly be sure I knew who I was dealing with. Last thing I would need is for someone to rebuild my engine and have it f@*ked shortly after, I would go nuts. I am thinking about finding a rebuildable motor to mess with while mine is ok. I think it would be very interesting to rebuild one, throw it in my car, then rebuild the other one, put it back in and sell the other one. The second time around I am sure I would get it right and the experience would be worth any losses (if their are any at all compared to paying someone). Plus their would be little down time for my car. Just thinking about it!:)

targa4me 02-10-2002 05:36 PM

I really like the idea of doing it myself. But I don’t have the right tools or the right place so it’s really not an option.

I think for the amount of money asked for a rebuild that a rebuild should be done under contract, so if there is any problems you’re covered. To many times the blame is shifted all around the place when there are problems….

Sorry Im raving but I cant stand the thought of being ….well…screwed over…. Ha ha.

You did not state your intended use for the car. If it is performance there are many very informative threads on this BBS - usually involving displacement increases and/or changing induction systems and cams. If reliability is the question - it seems that with 911 overhauls the best (cheapest) prices are not the “best” at all. You clearly get what you pay for - and having a knowledgeable rebuilder that will replace/machine and not reuse parts in the interest of economy if very important. Yours must be a 3.0 CIS ROW engine like came in an early SC? If so this means the bigger ports and for my money - Webers and S-equivalent cams would be very neat .... IMHO. Also have your mechanic show you what he found and watch the assembly.
Best of luck

Just curious, how much for the rebuild? What are they doing?

orbmedia 02-10-2002 06:18 PM

There already is a contract. When you give someone money to do something there is an implied contract that you're gonna get what you paid for. It's implied. You're protected.

Check out Extracting Power from CIS 911s

targa4me 02-10-2002 06:52 PM

Sure there is an implied contract. But that's no guarantee that you will get a good rebuild.

And what about enforcing that contract? How long and how much? Its not always clear-cut.

I don’t know about your system over there, (although I have seen Judge Judy on TV …which always gives me a good laugh!) but getting any satisfaction via legal methods is not easy and it cost $$. So common law for me is not the answer.

I have read many threads on this site (especially the MM engine rebuild thread) and was horrified by that. I don’t know how that person blames himself for not knowing enough! Isn’t that what he was paying for, expert, experienced advice?

Head service inc new valves, guides.
Cam Shaft Repair
New P/C
Inspection of Bottom End & Bearings if req.
Gaskets, New inlet rubbers on the CIS.
Tuning

$7000USD (or the price of a new small car with 3 year 100,000K warranty)

I presume you have seen the thread from Matt Holcomb and his 2.7 rebuild experience - he's in Melbourne...perhaps he can lend some advice for you, especially from the Oz perspective.

Here's the diary from his rebuild:

Good Luck!

Cam shaft repair and new P&C eh, sounds like 964 grind and displacement increase is almost free.

"Inspection of Bottom End & Bearings if req " What possible reason would there be not to replace bearings if you have the case apart?

Well, because the engine was re-built 30,000Ks ago inc bottom end bearings so Im assuming they are still in good shape but will inspect anyway.

dtw 02-10-2002 07:58 PM

Agreed. You're already in for 7k and an open bottom end. Tell 'em you want new bearings.

Since you're buying new P&Cs and having cam work done, have you considered any performance mods as mentioned above?

I would definately recommend ******** Hamilton in Brookvale.

targa4me 02-10-2002 09:07 PM

Hey Langers,

Didn’t you post a thread asking for a good mechanic in OZ?

Have you had any dealings with ******** HAMILTONS cause I have.

I gave them my car for a inspection after I purchased it and they didn’t even do a compression test.. (had the car for six weeks and charged like wounded bulls for F**K all.

and besides they already did the previous rebuild 30,000Km's ago. Didn’t last long..ay.

You gotta ask yourself why they would rebuild a 3.0L, leave a 5 blade fan in and no oil cooler when the car had a history of running hot?

This John guy in Vic looks good.. anybody have his number.
