Hi there,
From my understanding, a smugglers box is a little trap door under the luggage compartment where an optional oil heater(?) resided. I think thats where the evaporaror resides in later models. They are known as a smugglers box because it was a way illicit substances were 'smuggled' across borders in Europe when the heater was not it place. Apparently (reading a book written by Vic Elford), customs officials caught on and searched all 911's crossing through borders. |

I was under the assumption it was the area behind the gas tank which houses the steering links? (little trap door with catch)

Pull up your front trunk carpet and it's location will be obvious. It's a great place to carry a small tool kit as well.

My car had original AC but I removed it and covered all the holes.
Looks a bit dirty though.... Ed

I bought some of those stronger plastic food storage containers w/the sealed flip tops from the super market and store break down on the side of the road parts and tools there.

AC parts were in there on mine (gone now)
Needless to say before you put anything in there be sure nothing is going to bounce around and get caught up in the steering gear.... -C

"You put your WEED in there!" (old SNL skit)
It's the original home of the Webasto gasoline heater, which is a feature of the original SWB cars and a few rare longhoods. Later it became home to the air conditioning evaporator and blower motor.
