Need some strut help- 85 carrera

Need a little info, and I can't seem to land on the correct search terms. I am looking to overhaul the front suspension on my '85 Carrera and I am having an irrational fear of obtaining the wring parts.

What is the difference between the Boge struts pre 3/85 vs. the ones post 3/85? Any time I get this close to a model year cutoff I am thinking I need to disassemble before ordering parts, but I can't find the info to discern the difference.

Thanks for the help!!

Dave

early struts had inside threads for the retainer nut, later ones are outside. the chassis # should be the deciding factor. or raise the front and look up under the dust sleeve. the outer treaded ones have a capnut that is visible and you can see some threads below it to boot.

I'd replace w. '85 930 Bilsteins, they fit perfectly and include the hd shock inserts

Strut inserts in Boges...

I've been through exactly what you're talking about.
I ordered inserts based on the build date from my car. Of course, this information didnt prove accurate. However, there's no way of knowing which version is which just by looking at the part numbers. No description regarding external threads on insert vs. a threaded cap that retains the insert.
My car is an 85 and was set up opposite the description on the catalog pages. I'm sure Porsche had not the best handle on production control as they changed over from one type to the next. In any case, here is a photo of the external threads on the insert, along with P/N that correlates. I have shown also the retaining cap from the Boge housing. If you have that model, you will need the "other" Bilstein insert.

By the way, the tool needed to thread the cap on, or the insert in, can be obtained by calling Bilstein. They will sell that for a reasonable price. I have seen these, but ended up water jetting a spanner on my own.

Good luck.
