So I've got my motor out having a great learning experience. I think I'm working on a 911T.(Webers etc. etc.) I notice on the fwd end of the left side cam shaft the sprocket for the injection fuel pump and several studs on top of the case where the injection pump would be mounted. I look at the cars VIN number on the registration -119 22 0626. A 69, E Karmann Coupe. Someone has done body job on it (Carrera look alike).
Did T engines get shipped with the fuel injection sprockets and studs for retrofit, What's a Karmann coupe, How do I tell what I've got, should I care? especially when I'm ordering parts for the motor as a T. BTW there is no chassis plate visible at the front of the car as the location is hidden by the sheet metal filler across the bumper to hood sill. There is a picture of the car on my profile page on this board.

Steve you need to find the engine serial number. Is on a flat surface on the engine just to the right of the fan. The attached link will show your how to decipher the engine number to find out if you have a T or an E. http://www.911t.org/TechSpecs/number_codes.htm Most T bodies were made by Karman, nothing unusual there.

Thanks, I'll look tonight, The engine shroud is green, So I could assume someone converted back to conventional carbs. Cool.

This is a little bizzare.
I haven't checked other sources, but according to the Porsche Classic web page for 1969 ( http://www.us.porsche.com/english/excitement/classic/911/1969.htm ), Karmann didn't build any 911's that year. In fact, I didn't think they built anything but T chassis. [edit - oops, checked again, they did at least build some E coupes as well as T coupes] The green engine shroud of course indicates an E engine though, but it should have MFI. There would be tell-tale signs of MFI on the car, such as the pump belt drive on the cam and the heat hose on the left heat exchanger. The T's had Zeniths IIRC so if it has webers it most certainly sounds like a converted E. Anyways, have fun with it! And if it's an E...please sign up for the 911E Registry www.911eregistry.org Cheers,

Hello
You're VIN 119 22 0626 is for a 69 911E Porsche Coupe. A Karmann Coupe would have a 0 as the fifth number instead of a 2 in the VIN (for an E). Re: the engine serial number look at the second number. 1 for T 2 for E 3 for S Approximate Karmann chassis built for 69 model year. T 343 E 954 S 1492 Should be a 911E converted to Webers. Hope these numbers are accurate and helpful. |

For those who are anal....
According to "Original Porsche 911" my '69T is a Karmann-made coupe. It came with Webers. The 70 & 71 (and maybe the 72 & 73 in ROW?) came with Zeniths. Cam
