Angry hheeeelllp heat xchnger job

Instead of joining the boys in seattle for the ssi clinic, I stayed home to work on my own exhaust system backdate. Maybe I should have gone for the tips....

As reported earlier, the nuts holding the old exchangers on pretty much wrenched themselves off....absolutely no problems.

The oil lines at the thermostat however are another story. I'm getting a decent bite with my adjustable wrench, I've marinated the joints in penetrating oil, I've heated the joint with MAPP.....but the front joint is not coming loose.

What is the magic trick to get this joint loose??? It's killing me!

Oh my gawd!! I just read islands post about bending the stock oil lines instead of changing them.

Dog my cats!

If Icome out of this with $200 extra in mypocket, then I'm buying beer at the next clinic!

From all I've heard, I'm guessing it's easier to bend the existing line than to remove the line from the thermostat. Bend it up ABOVE the air hose the the new exchanger. That's about 5 or 6 inches, almost against the exhaust valve cover. So, the new routing of the oil line takes it ABOVE the air hose.

Hey Jasper, you should have come down. We were talking about how much of a pain it would be to bend that line, working alone in the driveway.
You do have one other alternative. Since it was your family who kept you from coming down, you can just break the new to them, that whenever they ride with you, to wear an extra sweater! (the oil line fits if the passenger heat-hose isn't attached.)

I really do want heat. That's one of the major reasons I'm doing this job.

Now...I did a trial fit of my new Dansk muffler, and there was interference of it by the oil line too. Specifically, the passenger side flange where the exhaust pipe attached to the muffler. That was only about a centimetre though, so an easy mod.

Where do I start bending? Do I modify the bend close to where the oil line meets the engine case (turn two I guess)?

I really shoulda come down.

It mostly gets straightened along the back side (along muffler); See pict's http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=59501

Another note: the heat exchanger "shell" may need to be pulled down. . .they can move up during shipping and handling.
