3080388
1968 911L RoW, Type 901/06
1991 cc: 66x80 mm, 9.0:1 CR, 'E'-cams, Weber 40IDA3C; 130 hp @ 6100 rpm
Close to the 1st magnesium case engine built (3080371).

Find the type number (red arrow) and confirm 901/06.
Just below the type number is a ‘build number’.
Please report the build number.

Please post pictures.

Best,
Grady

Will do. As always, your input is greatly appreciated, Grady.

It's being hot-water-washed right now, so I should have pics tomorrow I expect.

1968L, Manual trans - one of the first Mag cases. I should be able to update in the next day or so. Helping sell it for a friend, trying to research first.

It would have been much more desirable to have found one of the last of the aluminum case engines.
These 2.0 mag cases didn’t have bearing shells for the intermediate shaft in ’68.
One was added in 1969.
These engines need the two bearings retrofit.
By ’70 there were two - as today.
It is what it is.

Drag me off to look.

Best,
Grady

Hmmm. Maybe I'll run by my buddys shop to look at it in person. Any fail-safe checks for alum vs. mag, besides visual difference in color/sheen?

3280325 should be a type 901/14 aluminum case as 3280631 is the first mag 901/14.

According to my notes, the mag cases start with:
901/02 4080681
901/03 2080640
901/06 3080371
901/07 3180182
901/08 4180099
901/13 2180107
901/14 3280631
901/17 3380148

What we need is to find the build numbers and casting dates on either side of these numbers.

Best,
Grady

It is very easy to identify the difference between the Al case and Mg case with just a glance at the serial # location. The Al case has the serial # facing the rear of the car, and the Mg case has it facing the right side. There is not enough width on the Mg case for a rear facing serial #. You can see the type & build #'s on the Al case.

Great observation

Dave, wonderful piece of information.

Aluminum case serial number faces the back of the car.

Magnesium faces the passenger side of the car.
(Because the boss on the Mag case is too thin to stamp a number facing the rear of the car.)

It's a great rule of thumb.

I'm so glad you and Grady are on the job.

The other important numbers in Dave’s database are the case matching numbers.
These are on top of the crankcase at the parting, between the breather and the alternator ground strap.
These are easily visible when the fan shroud is not in place.

Another are the two casting numbers on the lower sides of the crankcase.
These have the form similar to a part number but end in “.?R” where “?” is a digit.
These indicate the ‘revisions’ to the castings.
The left case half may be different revision from the right half.

Still another is the ‘casting date’.
Dave, can you post an image of the casting date locations?

As you can see from Dave’s database, the engines were built in ‘build number’ sequence, not by engine number, type or other.
This is an important piece of the ‘Porsche puzzle’ as Porsche has lost much of this information.

Best,
Grady

Date locations for the aluminum case; this is consistent. A ring of dots around the 2 digit year; count the dots for the month of production. This is a casting date only, and precedes the machining of the case halves into a matched pair (and getting the pairing numbers), and also the manufacturing date of the engine where the build, type and serial numbers are stamped. I'm not sure when the intermediate shaft gear code is stamped, but possibly at the time of machining and getting the pairing number.

OK, got some pics of the case (can get more) and found out the rest of the motor is also available!

It sat on a shelf in New England for a few years, so does have some surface corrosion and the heads need new guides, etc. but it is all avail. I'll post a for sale thread soon.

Help with this one?

Hi folks,
I could also use some help. I've read a lot of threads and think I may have a handle on it, but it's a little confusing so I'd appreciate some feedback.

Here are the numbers on my engine:
901/06 9645
3080127

Also, the chasis is as follows:
11810123
Which I take to be a 68L but not the US bound L's which should have a pattern such as XXX5XXXX rather then XXX1XXXX. Is that correct?

Here some (poor quality) pics:

1968 911L ROW model with the correct engine, and most likely number matching as well. The 9645 is the engine built #, and shows that it has an aluminum case.
