Alarm key

My 85 911 has the alarm I guess because it has the key slot in the drivers door just like my manual says. My question is this...this is an old car so it the alarm any good? (do a good job) Should I get a key for it and try it. Would it be worth it? What would it cost to have another key cut to the tumbler? I can buy the key blank on line. Thank you, Nick

i have the factory alarm and it works fine. some here have said not to use it because it can fail and you can't start your car when it does.

I have one on my 1985. I have never tried it, but I probably should at some point. Like Ken said, though, I've read reports of it being the cause for immobilising the car if the (26 year old!) electronics fail.

Does anyone know if there is an 'easy' way to disarm the alarm to prevent future problems?

What steps do you need to do to effectively "Yank before it causes a problem"?
I have the same dilemma. Bought the car, and have no way to get a key for the darned thing.

Start pulling parts off, and I'm concerned that I'll have no ability to start the car. I know there is some tie-in to the ECU, but would rather execute a known method of disarming rather than find out the hard way.

It disables the DME via the Fuel Pump.

Mine works fine but I rarely use it unless in a suspect area.

It may be coincidence but when I first used it when I was new to her. I had a start issue, swapped the DME relay and it was fine and never reared it's ugly head.

Moral of the story, carry an extra DME relay and you will be fine if the alarm over does it's job and kills the DME relay.

I'd get the key.....

Early_S_Man had a post on what wires to disconnect and move around. He didn't often speak about the later cars.

Thanks milt for the helpful post. I'll do some searching down that avenue.
I'd love to make sure that this thing doesnt haunt me at some unexpected time.

You know what? I'm just going to leave that little key slot in the door alone. No problem! I found it...now I can lose it. Nick

Where in the driver's door? My wing windows say "Porsche Alarm", and I have a chip in the key. More than that, I do not know. (1989)

Maybe I smoked too much chronic one day, but I could've sworn that I once read that the stock alarm was connected to the front hood lamp on the same wire. I believe it may be able to be disarmed by disconnecting this wire?
