Exhaust, need help!!!!

Hello,

I have recently acquired a nice (almost) new Stainless Steel one in one out Silencer. The silencer in question came off a stock 77 Targa and I was planning on putting it on my what I thought was stock 77 Coupe. Much to my dismay I stuck my head under the car last week and noticed that the current exhaust system of the two in one out type.

Bugger....... guess that will teach me to be a bit more detailed before I go buying things!!

Anyhow, the question I have is whether a 77 Coupe would have been shipped with the two in one out system or is this an aftermarket upgrade done by a previous owner?

I have virtually no history on the car.

Attached are pics of the new silencer and a left and right view of my heat exchangers.

I think your car would have the same setup as mine when new i.e 1 in, 1 out. You're quite lucky as people will pay big £££ for your setup.

I managed to take some more pictures this weekend.

It has been suggested that I have Bursch thermal reactor replacement pipes in conjunction with the the thermal reactor heat exchangers. With these new pictures can anybody shed any more light on this?

Thanks in advance...

What you have there is a set up that had thermal reactors and heat exchangers that each have an outlet to the rear. The termal reactors were replaced by the cast iron pipe conected to the heat exchanger on one end and the cylinder head on the other. (you can see it in the picture.

I scraped the old heat exchangers for SSIs. The ones pictured are not the pre '74 updates the you read about, they are Porsche standard issue for the '77 CA version.

I hope the above helps.

Cool

I agree w/Marc... Looks like my Calif. '77 2.7. I don't think there is any market for the nickel pipes that I have that replaced the thermal reactors?? I could use a few grand for the unique, rare, exotic, fine quality tubes. I'll split the sale price with anyone who can offload them.

Looks the same as my 77 too. The thermal replacements are like a 3 into 1 header on each side. Then 2 in 1 out muffler.

I like the set up and can't see how SSIs would make that much of a difference. It doesn't look very restrictive with the current set-up.

Good luck finding another muffler

Shawn:

The SSIs are true equal length headers. The thermal reactor set up is not. In addition, the weight of the SSIs is less than the cast iron pipes, and original heat exchangers.

Finally, you too will come to the SSI side when holes develop in the heat exchangers (makes for some unwanted ingredients in the cabin heat).

There have been documented increases in hp from 10 to 20 depending on application.

Regards

Marc I did not know about the equal length part, but my heat exchangers and 3 into 1 thermal replacements dont weigh much. I agree now on the restriction part. Thanks

Oh yeah and I don't have the $ to blow, who knows one day when they need to be replaced
