Backdate? Update? Date correction.

Ok heres the deal. I've owned this car since 1996 and bought it as a roller with fresh 930 turbo steel flares, 6 point cage and C2 turbo bodywork. I guess it was technically an update at the time, but here we are 15 years later so it is now a modest backdate. (car is actually a 1976) After much thought I've decided to bring it back to the correct mid 70's era via IROC look so here are a few pics of the project: Backdating the update. This is where it was:

Took a little more work then I thought. I first had to reweld the rear center reflector panel back in and source a pair of mid year tail light housings.

Next is mounting the IROC front and rear bumpers. (I've been meaning to upgrade the oil cooler anyway.)

Now the completed rear section. Had to change muffler out to SS M&K courtesy of a fellow Pelicanite. :)

Notice the G50 Flares. (thinking ahead?;))

And of course, cant forget to bring the gauges back to stock;

Thats it for now...Waiting on the new wheels to arrive. There are still a few details to attend to like the IROC license plate lights and some minor bodywork on the right side where the rockers once were. Its also an opertune time to install the 22 mm front sway bar thats on the way. More to come.....

very nice work, are you going to sell the tail lights and center reflector?

jimtweet 03-12-2011 12:09 AM

i love that color by the way, are you going to color match the rocker area? or leave it black

Rodsrsr 03-12-2011 07:00 AM

Thanks Jim,

I've sold all of the 965 pieces except the rear bumper. I'm going to leave that lower area Black for now because there really is no way to blend it in properly without pretty much painting the whole car. There was some minor damage that the rocker panels covered, which is why the area needed to be painted in the first place.

POORSH 03-13-2011 10:01 AM

Looking good, Rod.

WOLVERINE 03-13-2011 01:21 PM

Looks Great...Subscribed....man your bumpers cam out great, DIY or sourced out?

Rodsrsr 03-13-2011 04:16 PM

Thanks! Bumpers are Rennspeed and fit very well right out of the box. Aside from paint, I'm on a DIY budget.

Rodsrsr 03-13-2011 06:32 PM

Front decal arrived;

Now I'm in stall mode because I really dont feel like removing the gas tank. Oh well, tomorrows another day. SmileWavy

WOLVERINE 03-13-2011 10:38 PM

Where did you get the material for the oil cooler opening?

Rodsrsr 03-14-2011 02:57 PM

I got the material from a custom grille maker on Ebay. I've been looking for the site so I can send you the link, but I cant find it. I'll see if I can find the packing slip for their name. Its the same material I used on the Ducktail also.

Rodsrsr 04-22-2011 06:54 PM

Lindseys have arrived! All I can say is that they are worth the wait. :D

WOLVERINE 04-27-2011 05:33 PM

Congrats, the car looks incredible....whats next?... fine tuning?

mholbrook38 04-27-2011 06:15 PM

For another "look", buy the headlight rim covers and paint them body color. Then you can have a sleek look or bold. I think the car looks absolutely terrific. I too love the color. Keep up the good work.

Rodsrsr 04-27-2011 07:45 PM

Thank you both for the compliments! It was a lot more work then I thought and I did tons of "while your in there" stuff. Wolverine, the car is actually dialed in with the correct air fuel ratios all throughout the rpm range. It sounds ratty and doesn't like to idle when its cold but clears up after a few minutes. I think its because of the big cams, the motronic takes a while to catch up. Should have a better video soon with a nice pass at full boost. :D

al lkosmal 04-27-2011 08:52 PM

Rod,
Yes........ That turned out right.

Regards,
Al

Wow this is a freakin hot ride! Question: were those yellow lenses in that third shot? and would you still have them and want to sell them? I guess thats three questions. And an extremely long shot.....

Rodsrsr 04-28-2011 08:04 AM

Thanks guys! One of the yellow lenses was cracked from a DE, so I had to replace them anyway. I decided to just go stock because the yellow cuts down visibility too much, plus I wanted to keep it more true to the IROC look. If you want to do the yellow, there is a glass tint paint that you spray on the inside of the lens. You may have to go to a paint or home goods store like Michaels to get it, but it actually works very well.

Alpina740 01-12-2015 12:39 PM

What an awesome looking car! Love it!

redturbo911 01-12-2015 06:38 PM

Car looks great. More shots of the Lindseys please. Can not get enough of that.

Rodsrsr 01-12-2015 08:52 PM

Wow resurrecting an old thread! Thank you for the kind words. The car has since then gone through a major transformation. I decided to put it back on the street so out with the lexan glass, Viper green paint, and onto a toned down more streetable car. I also went turbo. :D but thats another story... It even has power windows and a stereo, while still weighing in a a cool 2300 lbs.

Love it!

Do I spy a super charger on the original build?

JV911SYDNEY 01-12-2015 10:23 PM

Fat! Love the centre exit exhaust

dwight45 01-12-2015 10:46 PM

Your car is stunning and it sounds like it is going to be even more stunning. By the way you are a bad influence. lol.

dwight45 01-12-2015 10:49 PM

I love the shot of the rear end. So purposeful. That's the view most people will see anyway.

redturbo911 01-13-2015 05:23 AM

Tastefully done. Great job. Also sent you a PM.

Macroni 01-13-2015 05:38 AM

excellent......

Jose_JGC 01-13-2015 07:25 AM

She is a peach! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat6.gif
I like all the changes that you made, the duck tail instead of a turbo tail, the bumpers, the exhaust pipe, ...
What did you do to the engine grille? Can you post a pic of it?
Jose

DSPTurtle 01-13-2015 07:48 AM

That look is awesome. Very nice execution!

Rodsrsr 01-13-2015 07:54 AM

Yes JV911SYDNEY, good eye. The Green version had a Paxton supercharger, the new build I went turbo. Jose_JGC...for the grill I had to cut the hole bigger to accommodate a full bay intercooler. I used a thin mesh on top. If you look closely you can see the intercooler. Fun car, now I need to drive it more. SmileWavy
