Backdating oil lines

Hi

Currently my 3,2 is up on supports and drained of oil. The plan is to backdate to headers and change out the oil lines. I now realize I may have gone about this in the wrong order, but one learns as long as one lives. Originally I was going to do everything myself, but have now decided to let the local shop change out the exhaust (just afraid that with the limited space I have that I will break off all the studs).

My question is - is there enough room to change out the oil lines before removing the stock exhaust? Not so worried if the lines touch the exhaust as it will not really have time to heat up in the short drive to the shop. Seems like such a waste to fill her up with oil only to drive it two miles to the shop and then have them drain it again.

Any thoughts?

/Johan

While not the most pleasant job, this job is really not all that hard. Just requires patience and a good set of tools. If you were to break off 1-2 studs, there are jigs you can buy to fix the issue. This was one of the first things I did to my car... I am not an expert but I would think you can do this one.

One suggestion on how to do this project...

I would really suggest that you consider using the Elephant Universal Crossover Pipe. It will allow you to switch between early and late exhaust systems without changing the oil lines. Seeing that you have the 915 transmission it is fairly easy. You just need to lower the engine a bit and it goes over the trans. Once it is in you will never have to touch it again.

(On my G50 car I had to grind down a rib on the bell housing but it was easy and was well worth it to get the ability to switch out exhausts for smog check and whatnot.)

I would second the suggestion of doing the job yourself. If your car is already on supports and drained of oil you're part way there already. I did this to my car a couple of years ago - also an '84, and I changed from stock exhaust to SSI's and M&K muffler. There was quite a bit of work involved, what with swapping the HEs, back-dating the oil pipes and back-dating the heat. However, personally I think you'd probably make a better job doing it yourself than your local shop would.

As regards your original question, I can't really see how you'd possibly back date the oil pipes without removing the exhaust first - even if the back-dated oil pipes were to fit, I think it would be a nightmare just from an access point of view. Why not soak the exhaust studs with your penetrating oil of choice for a day or so, and then just give them a go? You have the special long socket which goes through the access holes through the heat-exchangers, yeah? I really suggest you go the route of doing it yourself. Everything you need to know is on this board, so as long as you're not in a huge hurry why not just take your time and crack into it. Its a fun and rewarding project.

Alright, I'll give it a go. Worst case then I can still roll it down to the local shop.

Thanks for the encouragement!

Well let us know if you need any advice. I am far from expert, but I went through the whole process of backdating the exhaust fairly recently so its still quite fresh in my mind.
