trying to decide between a 1979 911sc ( UK spec ) v. a 1985 911 3.2 Carrera Cabrio ( also UK spec. ).
Both in very good condition, with service history etc. etc. The reason I am considering both is because the Cabrio selling price has dropped for a quick sale ( and as it has a brown!! interior ). so they're virtually the same price. I realise the 3.2 engine is more powerful, but that they both have the 915 gearbox. So I'm looking for advice based on the DRIVING EXPERIENCE! - do you still get 911 fun with the Cabrio - or is the chassis too flexible, too much skuttle shake, too much additional weight due to strengthening etc., etc.? We have a garage - so security fears would not be enough of a reason to rule out the cabrio - provided if was as much fun to drive as an SC Coupe ( or very, very close ). Have had Cabrios before ( Mk1 Golf GTI & Audi 2.3e, as well as a Corrado VR6 ) so ideally want the fun of 911 acceleration / handling combined with being a convertible. Thnx for any advice ![]() |

Can't help on the Cabrio issue. However I only recently got my Porsche and test-drove quite a few back whilst looking. Noticed huge differences in similar models. One particular '79 SC absolutely flew (bodywork was shot though), and handled like a dream. The day after I drove an 81 SC which felt slow by comparison, and was all over the road. The gearboxes felt completely different too. I guess you need to try and drive the cars back to back.
I eventually settled on a Swiss 3.2 Coupe (lower power than UK but I didn't know this when I purchased ![]() |
