Replacing ignition key barrel - how to strip steering lock mechanism?
 

Hi,

I am trying to find out how to strip the actual steering lock mechanism (already taken out of car) for a 1970 911T.
I got a new genuine ignition switch from Porsche but discovered it was faulty where sometimes it would block before cranking. A few twiddles and it would work ok. I brought it back and they replaced it fine.... but in the meantime this blocking had put excess pressure on the locating tab/blade mechanism from the key to the electrical switch unit and broke it.

So I picked up an old steering lock mechanism to see if I could strip it and replace the broken bit - see arrow in picture of the good piece I want to transfer.

I want to keep my original keys etc.... anyone know if I can do this.. and how?

There are some good theads on doing this. I have drilled out the soft plug as is shown - it's at an angle and I have a toothpick stuck in the hole so you can see it. Others have had good luck using a dremel and cutting enough around the plug to get ahold of it with some side-cutters and pulling it out.

Ah... I didn't even see the soft plug. I'll give that a go. Thanks!

Do you think I'll have any issue with not having the key for the one I got as parts for my own? Not sure if its necessary to even do anything with the tumblers if that soft plug is drilled out.

PS: I did try searching for threads... mustn't have searched enough as didn't find anything.

No problem - just put the tumbler that you have a key for in the final assembly that you are going to use - they are interchangeable.

the ones i did had a hard pin. i wonder what the real method is to get it out without damaging the area around the pin.

I would like to know too. I guess it's not designed to be easily replaced given that it would usually last the lifetime of the car.

I just did this. Simply drill out the pin and go a bit further into the tumbler (the tumbler that you are going to use). I found no way to get the pin out except by drilling it out entirely.

Insert the new tumbler (with slight hole as mentioned above) and squeeze some JB weld in the hole to act as the replacement pin. Should last forever.

I had good luck by drilling beside the pin just deep enough to get a pick against the pin and pry it up.

that's what i've been doing. i haven't seen a soft, drillable pin yet. maybe some were.
