How high to get it out?

How high does the rear of a 911 have to be to get the engine out?

I have a stock 1985 Carrera.

Thanks.

are you taking the bumper off?

Measure from the top of the engine to the ground (A). Measure the distance from the bottom of the engine to the ground (B). Measure the lowest height of whatever you are using to drop the engine (C). A-B+C= Height needed.

I had planned to leave the bumper on. Is it easy to remove the bumper? Is it worth it to remove it?

Its pretty easy to remove. If you don't I found you have to also raise the front of the car otherwise the car is at too steep an angle to get the engine out clean.

I've heard rear end jack height something like 36"... [rear bumper on]

I use an atv jack to lower the engine initially, which requires the car to be level on 4 jackstands.

After the engine is down, I lower the front end, which raises the rear bumper quite a bit.

Use 6-ton jackstands, which are wide and have the required stability. It's suicide to use 2 ton stands, which won't go up high enough without being on blocks.

Use a jack pad on the side of the car with blocks to get the car up high enough. I have video somewhere if you need it.

The bumper comes off very easily and makes the job a lot easier.

When the engine is down, the car is on jackstands, I like to use a 2X6 or 8 a couple feet long under the floor pan as far to the rear of the pan I can get. Using a floor jack, lift the chassis and its no problem getting high enough to clear the engine.

+1 This is how i do it. No need to remove the bumper.

+2 easiest way.

agree with rusnak and sjf911. remove the bumper, or at least the bumper guards. also, i used a cherry picker/engine lift attached to rear frame rails to initially lift the rear of the car high enough for engine installation. quick and easy.
