Engine numbers : only 5 figures.
 
Hi,

Someone sells a 70 911 e 2.2, he hasn't got the complete engine history.
"21914" is only written on the case near the fan arm.
I saw 2 oil hoses on the chain case, not OEM for a 2.2L ?

Is it really a 2.2 L displacement ?
Is there less value in comparaison with a matching numbers, even after a complete engine rebuilt ?

The oil line shows that it has the Carrera chain tensioners and oiling. That is a very good upgrade. The numbers don't add up though. A 1970 engine number will be 7 numbers and be either a 610xxxx or a 620xxxx.
It is possible that the case is a replacement case from the factory and that number could mean anything. Please look again and see if you've got everything. It can be very difficult to see.
The value/matching numbers question is not highly significant unless you plan to enter the car in concours events where you're claiming or trying to prove some heritage. If the engine size matches the cars year and that is what you want, then that is a value to you or the buyer. You will never convince a buyer wanting a numbers match car to buy something that doesn't match. There are plenty of cars out there with good engines that aren't a match and their price isn't compromised significantly.

The dimension (along the axis of the car) seems to be too small (between red arrows).

The engine number on a ’70 should be stamped from the right (green arrow)

The number “21914” may be a build number.
Is the number “911/01” or “911/04” just above (to the front of the car) the “21914: number?
Is there any sign of tampering?

Note the dimensions of the case casting with the engine number (Green arrow).

The (red arrow) is where the 'build number' and the 'type number' should be.
Ignore the yellow arrow above.

Please post images of the VIN in the trunk, ‘public VIN’, and door jam decal.
Also important is the ‘build number’ under the trim next to the radio opening.
Images of the back-side of each are important.

I have only those photos and informations. I will see again the car.
Under the car, i think i saw the number 911/01 but i don’t remember if it was on the engine case or gearbox but no 911/01 above the 5 figures.
Where is the ‘build number’ under the trim next to the radio opening ?

21914 is a valid build # for a late 1969 2.0 engine. The type # would be 901/xx. It would be a magnesium case with the serial # on the side of the case like the photos by Grady. You might want to get the engine casting numbers from the sides of the case 901 101 101.xx and 901 101 102.xx to establish the date of the engine.

The chassis # near the radio can be found by removing the knee pads and looking on the dash frame just below the radio opening. This number should start with 1 and be 7 digits; it does not directly translate into a VIN but I can tell something about the VIN from it. To confirm the VIN, one needs to send both the chassis # and the VIN to the factory, and they will say they either match or do not match; nothing more.
