Fuchs Center Caps: Anodized or Painted?

I have two sets of black center caps off of 1987 Fuchs wheels. I thought that these were just anodized black, but one appears to have paint peeling off. It's still a dull black underneath.

I know that the wheels themselves were anodized and then painted black. How were the original center caps finished?

Is the peeling paint a failed attempt by a previous owner to dress them up, or do I have seven caps who's original paint has completely flaked off? (Seems unlikely).

I can't answer your question directly but this may help---> the OEM black center caps often turn purple with age ( as mine did), and I shot them with Rustoleum 7777, likewise refinished the black centers with same. If prepped correctly, this should be a long-lasting solution. I never saw OEM flake....just turn purple or discolor instead.

Most of mine have turned purple-ish. I actually kind of like the patina, but I do have at least one that is clearly peeling. I suspect that those may have been painted by the previous owner.

I agree..... you can redo and Rustoleum rattle-can 7777 is just about perfect. Of course you can find Wurth satin finish product but it will cost more, be harder to find, and not be much better.

Closer inspection indicates that the caps on my car have the original finish and the four that came with my spare wheels may have been painted. I'd like to remove the paint without damaging the original finish below.

Any suggestions?

The original finish on the caps is anodized. You can use paint stripper to remove the peeling paint leaving you with the anodized finish underneath.

Fuchs wheel refinish

Hi Will:

Reading your post about the center caps.

Did you respray you wheel centers, not just the caps?

I am going to be cleaning up mine on my '82 SC. Bought Eastwood satin black wheel paint. Not sure what I'm going to do on the silver; don't want to rub off the anodizing.

Any suggestions if you did yours?

Thanks.
