Engine "stutter"

Engine stutter on a 1983 911SC.

This has been a problem for a couple of years now and I am worried that if I do not diagnose it now my car will leave me on the side of the road one of these days.

This almost never happens when I am accelerating, it happens more often when I am just cruising at 3000-3400 RPM.

I do know that the fuel filter likely has 30K plus miles on it and am going to change that, but my experience with other vehicles is that a dirty fuel filter causes more problems on acceleration than just plain cruising, so I am doubtful that the fuel filter is the root of my problem.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Likely a fuel filter or crap in the tank.....

plugs, rotor, wires, cap, etc. etc....could be just about anything.

Particularly the fuel filter.

If it's got 30K on it, I'd replace it just for peace of mind. I've seen all kinds of problems with dirty filters, other than the one you describe.

I would look at the silver relay under the pass. seat. When that goes irratic is like having a fuel pressure problem.

i have an 87 that has stuttered a few times on different occasions but going uphill but not accelerating just maintaining speed. i haven't changed the fuel filter but plan to. is this relay you talk about under the passenger seat on all fi 911s?

Just on the 80 to 83 with the oxygen sensor has the silver relay.
Carrera has a whole different set of culpable sensors that can cause problems.

Ken, that's the DME relay that is particular to all 3.2 Carreras. It is probably not a contributor to your stalling issues, the DME relay is usually a contributor to starting issues.

Thanks

Thanks for the replies, when I can get beyond my shift-coupler adjustment problems I will change out the fuel filter and go from there.

Anyone have any good advice for adjusting my shift coupler? I describe my problems with that here:
