I put one in my car a couple of months ago would definitely say it was worth the $. The car pulls much harder at lower rpm's and just 'feels' faster. Makes it a little easier to drive too because you don't have to rev it as high to keep in the power band. It was a piece of cake to install too.

Take a look at his website and check out the dyno results. I believe that he can custom tune a chip for what kind of driving you do and intake/exhaust set up if not stock.

He has a good rep.

You will find no one on this site that will disapprove of a SW chip.

chip

My car came with an Authority chip and my car runs great without a hitch. Just drove it 200 miles today and it pulls great with pure power. Nick

Not to call you out on this but what does (Auto authority, I assume) have to do with anything? The OP was asking about the SW chip. Besides I dont even think Auto Authority is even in business anymore so it is moot. Just sayin,,

Holly "Caca" Batman... was my reaction after I did the swap.

Can hardly wait for when Das Babe get back on the road with SW SSIs/94 Octanes Upgrade.

Should be Holly "Caca" Batman Squared

Glad I came across this thread! I'm also thinking about putting in a SW chip given every porsche enthusiast & his mother claim this is the best thing since sliced bread. Rave reviews at 911chips.com help too. I'm taking my 911 in to the shop on Tues for an oil leak, but am considering also getting the chip installed. My questions:

1) Is this something the mechanic can install on short notice, or does the chip need to be specially ordered? If so, how can i do this & about how pricey is it?

2) How does a Steve Wong chip work?

3) Are there any drawbacks?

Just about the only reason I wouldn't get it installed is if I feel installing this chip takes away from the "originality" of my 911 - I generally prefer to keep just about everything stock and always think twice about "fixing up" anything - a sentiment I'm sure shared by many on this board - but in this case it seems to be an exception.. opinions welcome

The "search" button is your friend...

Also, 911CHIPS - Performance Chip Tuning for the Porsche 911

The best bang for the buck, without going too far overboard, would be a cat bypass, and the SW Chip. All of the above, plus vastly improved highway MPG's.

The other nice thing about the SW chip is that you can actually meet and hang out with the guy, himself, at local Porsche events. He's not just mass-marketing these chips. He's actually out there driving and racing this stuff. That's an element of customer service that's hard to beat (at least in the SoCal region).

And I think it's Autothority, FWIW.

You order the Chip on line, you get it within a week, you install it within 1/2 hour. Excellent instruction. They are on line so you can read them while the chip is in transit.

It will be your best $375 ever spend. I had my wife pay for it (X-mas gift). Couldn't wait so it was X-mas in July that year

2) How does a Steve Wong chip work?

Through mapping. Well explained on the site. Do read (all) the FAQs.

3) Are there any drawbacks?

Well... Within a shor time, like everybody else, you will want more power. So Steve will re-chip it for a small fee ($75 I think). That is nothing too compare to the SSIs/Muffler up-grade cost

Just about the only reason I wouldn't get it installed is if I feel installing this chip takes away from the "originality" of my 911... opinions welcome

You should discuss that with your psychiatrist but you will keep your original chip in the glove box (as recommended) so basically speaking if one ask... You could answer that the original chip is in the car

Have Fun

get the chip

I did get the S Wong chip and it does make a difference. Mine had another after market version and after I put this one in it does so much better.
don't think too much more---go do it. You'll be glad you did.

I'm a veteran of venerable "chip war"....still waiting for my motor to grenade any day now . I actually learned a LOT from Loren (and really appreciated him initially)...sure hope he's OK these days. Let me throw out a "caveat" here....I love my SW chip, but imo it's simply NOT a night & day difference (compared to a stock 87-89 chip), but it's definitely noticable. If one has a stock '84-86 chip, either SW's or a '87-89 will ABSOLUTELY give you 10 more hp that Porsche left on the table initially. I once did six dyno runs (with a bunch of other Pelicans), swapping the chips back & forth between each run (I already had the sport muffler/premuffler combo on), and "my" runs showed no discernable difference on the graphs. YMMV, but I do recommend SW's tuning efforts even though it didn't show up on WOT dyno runs...Steve's magic is in the partial throttle mappings...great guy imo too!

OK, thanks for clearing that up. Obviously something that's been discussed "ad infinitum" before I joined the club.
