Rattling noise in Engine??
Sometimes, not always, when i leave for work my engine has a consistent rattling noise that goes up with the rpms. The only thing that can cause this i think is that i am parked nose up at an angle. What does this mean? Is it a big problemm?

Its an 86 or so carrera engine with 25,000 miles

do not drive the car until you fix this
it may be the timing chains - they sound like a chain being drug around inside of a metal garbage can |
Could just be a throw-out bearing.
|
No, it's the cam chain tensioners.
They have no collapsed, but you could need new ramps and tensioners. |
+++ DO NOT START until you fix the chain tensioners.

Remove the fan and a/c belts and turn her on, if the rattle is still there, then it is the chain rattle inside the cover, possible tensioner failer or ramp discinergration ( made of plastic )
I would get a Stethescope from Harbor Freight and check to see if you can hear which side is rattling. (sorry my spell check is not working) I had the dreaded "garbage can" noise once about a 2 years ago, the only change made was I started using Brad Penn oil. Do not get me wrong I don't think it was the oil but too much of a coincedence. It went away on it's own. |
