coming out of winter storage
Hi guys OK, its getting close to that time of year when I am getting ready to pull my 82 SC out of the garage for summer.
Still new at this and wondering what hits or tips might help make the transition a little easier on the car. Stabilized the fuel, changed the oil and drained the windshield/headlight washer fluid and parked it in the garage last fall. Basically last year I put the battery charger on for a couple hours and turned her over turned out good for me but thinking there might be some better guidelines to follow this spring. Thanks

I've basically done that....with some variations ( sometimes on jackstands...allowing running not only the motor, but also allowing the gearbox to be engaged.....when I run the car in winter)......for over 17 years with no issues.
I've been criticised for doing this....people say better to put it into "dead" storage.....but my "twist" was that when I *do* run the engine...I would run the engine until warm and up to temp...and THEN at least another 30-40 minutes. Did this maybe every 2 weeks, sometimes longer, sometimes shorter. At aboiut 2000 rpm...not idle speed. 911 engines don't lube well at prolonged idle speed. Car is laid up at least 5 months for a Buffalo winter.....had no issues. I'm sure you will encounter some counter-points to this....but there you are. I figured "dead" storage allows a lot of oil and oil film to drain low and leave topside of engine bits and pieces and cams..maybe totally dry. It's kinda a crap-shoot, but my feeling was the car would be better "exercised" every so-often as long as it went beyond bringing it up to temp.

For just a winter rest it sounds like you've covered the basics - get in and drive. Just go easy on it for a while till she comes fully up to temp.

I like to disable the fuel pump and ignition and crank the engine for a few seconds till I see oil pressure. After that I just reconnect everything and start it up. I also like to check the tire pressure.

Just brought my 87 Cab home from storage earlier today. I had pulled battery, filled tank + Stabil and over-inflated tires - about 45psi. I just took some air out of the tires, put in the battery and it started right up....even without a puff of smoke.
Tonight I changed the oil and filter and went for a 40 mile drive...so happy to have her back.....
