my oil level sender (in the fender) is out ... So, I'm about to change it, and I refer to the Wayne's "101 projects"... It is not mentionned, but : do I have to sump the oil from the tank before, or is the gauge higher than the oil level?
And how to get the sender away from the tank (do I have to use a screwdriver) ? there is no way to grab it ...

Hi Olivier,
You don't have to drain the tank first, and to remove it just undo all the bolts, disconnect the wires and carefully pull the sensor out of the hole. It's a bit tricky but you should get it out in no time. Cheers, Tim. ____________ 1983 SC Targa |

Before you buy a new one you should make sure that there is a fault with it (if you haven't already). I changed mine when my gauge started to read full all the time, but it still doesn't work.

Olivier, check those "dinky & thin' wires first.
If you ground the signal wire, it should "peg" the gauge. Can't remember which is which, sorry. That tells you that the wires and the gauge are good. And check the solder connections on the push on connectors going to the float. Good Luck

thanks...
I've already changed the wire connectors, and cleaned everything... I'll check the signal wire, but I'm not sure I clearly understood (infact, I do not unstand "peg" ![]() furthermore, it sometimes works again; is it a clue about the fact that the guilty may be the gauge ? ![]()

peg = all the way to the top, sorry.
When you unplug the wire. It should drop the needle back down to the bottom. Then ground the wire and in should go back to the top.

well, I checked, and the needle is always "pegged" (I 'm learning
![]() Does it mean that there is a "ground" point somewhere between the gauge and the sender?

Before we over react. Switch the wires on the tank and see what you get.
When I changed the gasket on the tank. I hooked it up backwards and it "pegged" the gauge. See what you get.

I think your sending unit at the tank is set up like a rehostat. What you can do to check it is connect the + terminal to one side of the sending unit. With a VOM switch to the dc volt reading and connect one terminal to the other therminal on the switch and connect the other terminal to the wire. Raise and lower the float. If the voltage changes then your sending unit is ok. The problem is then at the gauge.
--(12V+)--(SU)--(VOM)--(12V- or ground) SU - Sending Unit (tank float) VOM - Volt/Ohm/Meter Hope this info helps. Steve |
