3.2 to 3.4 or 3.5 conversion?
 

Bruce Anderson writes favorably about getting converting the 3.2 Carrera engine to 3.4 or 3.5 liters. He writes that the 3.4 conversion is truly "bolt on" and can add something like 30 HP, particularly with the euro engine.

I have a eurospec Carrera and have been thinking about this conversion for some time. Does anyone have any more information or opinions on it? I have seen few owners do the conversion, but it sounds like a great idea. Is there a down side that I am not aware of? How much would it cost?

The way I understand it, all you do is buy new or have your cylinders bored and sleaved to 98mm and buy new pistons and you have 3.4

I'm running sleaved cylinders and 98mm J-E pistons and they work just fine.

The down side is cost. The appropriate Mahle piston and cylinder set sell for >$3000

Simple don't buy Mahle!
J-E pistons about $1000 with rings and wrist pins.
Bore and sleave cyls. About $1200

Motormeister has the 98 mm p/c's for $900, at a variety of compression ratios. Why the big difference in price? They also have cams for $300-350. Are they of poor quality?

Are they just the pistons? Used? Mahle? The going rate for Mahle 98mm pistons with correct wristpins for a 3.2 to 3.4(or a 3.0 to 3.2) conversion from any reputable vendor is as quoted.

They are new sets, but don't specify mahle. I think I will give them a call, just to ease my curiousity. www.motormeister.com

The motormeister pistons sets for ~$899 are pistons only. They are custom built forged alloy pistons - I am not sure if they are built by JE or someone else though. Kinda curious myself.

Some will tell you, you have to convert to a twin plug ignition when going to >3.2L or else run a lower compression which offsets some of the desired power gain.

There is one thing that you have to remember when you are adding parts to the Porsche. Those parts should be the same quality or better that what is there. The second thing to rememeber is "There is no free lunch" somewhere you will pay for it. If you cherry pick and get the cheapest it's gona' bite you in the ass, been there done that, trust me. If you are going to own a Porache then step up and do it correctly, don't get me wrong about shopping for a price SOS pads are SOS pads buy them at the mini-mart for $3.79 or Walmart for $1.78 if you are getting the same exact thing then price shop but don't get cheap when it comes to things like reground cams, forged pistons, major motor hard parts. Find out what the going rate is and then really really look at the ones that are cheaper before you spend your cash.
