How do I get my rear wheel hubs off
I have to replace some wheel studs on my 78 SC but I dont know what tool to use or even get to take off the funky hub nuts?
A little help? Thanks! Norm ![]()

You need:
3/4 inch 30mm socket, breaker bar and 4 foot pipe. With car on ground, wheels on, brake set, put the pipe over the BB and use your weight to break the nut loose. DO NOT REMOVE IT, just get it moving. Then jack up the car and remove the nut. The inner most hub (attached to the CV joint) can be pounded out with a drift (after uncoupling the CV joint). Now the hard part, the hub needs to pull out of the inner bearing. The books show a tool (large drift) that is placed on the inner side of the hub to pound it out. I have heard that a slide hammer can be connected to studs to pull the hub. Also have seen a puller tool for removing hubs and bearings. Now the reality part. I ended up removing the banana arms and taking them to a machine shop to pull it all apart after bending the above mentioned hub puller trying to replace my wheel bearings. Maybe someone knows a trick to replace the stud w/ o removing the hub. Good luck.

Read the following post:
http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/vb/showthread.php?threadid=5708&highlight=wheel+stud They can be replaced without removing hubs.

Yeah. John Walker says they can be driven out the e-brake hole. If so (and I believe John), then this is far preferable. If you remove the hub, you will need to replace the rear wheel bearing also. They are not cheap.

yes, you can replace them thru the e/brake cable hole. stock length studs don't even require that. since you asked though, the easiest way is to use two 3 foot long prybars with the tips against the retainer plate bolt heads, and pull it out. some come out easy, some require more effort. the inner race usually comes out with the hub. no one makes a tool to remove the hub, but the normal wheel bearing tool does the bearing job.
