Engine Serial Number Question - Easy!

631xxxx = what year 911? (1971, right?)
630xxxx = what year 911? (1970, right?)

Right! I think the 3 indicates a Euro T engine. -- Curt

Where do you find the engine serial number? I know.... on the engine.... Where should I be looking?

6 - 6 cylinder
3 - S engine (1 - T; 2 - E)
1 - 1971 (9 - 1969; 0 - 1970; etc..)

So 631**** is a 1971 6 cylinder S engine.

To find an engine number, look at the housing that surrounds the fan...go to 3:00, then look straight down. A vertical casting, part of the block. The number is stamped there...on it's right hand flat surface. 1970 911S engine numbers are 6300001 through 6302480. 1971 911S engine numbers are 631001 through 6311959. Numbers courtesy of PCA's publication "The Porsche Family Tree".

Hi all,

Here's a handy-dandy link to none other than Porsche's own website for the early 911 cars. I find it very useful.

There is also a 914 flavor:
