Had to do a lot of research on this lately. There is a thread with a good sized parts list of what you would have to change to get the 944 unit to work on a 911. It is a lot more then just the chip and some jumpers. That is no assurance that you will end up with something that really is serviceable. After this conversion you may find you still have a part that will quickly fail because a portion of the circuits are overloaded.

If you want to play with it as a "hobby" then there probably isn't any harm in playing but it is really a ticking time bomb at best.

There are a number of threads from 2002 with people playing with BMW DMEs to get a cheap $60 replacement. Those threads died out because you can get some of them to run in a Porsche. The problem is the injector driver circuit is designed for a different type injector that draws less current. Run it for a while and it will burn up.
Recently I bought a DME from a fellow Pelican and afterward we found out it was one of the BMW "059" DMEs that had been converted by using a 28pin ROM. It did start ok but seemed to be rather flat on power which is why I investigated inside.
(The guy who sold it to me was very good about it and immediately took it back. He had purchased it from a junk yard and it had been sold to him as a genuine Porsche DME.)

End result:
Get the correct Porsche DME. While you are at it make sure it has the 28 pin ROM. If it doesn't it is an easy fix to switch it from a 24 pin. Then you can run the #1267355358 chip which is the final version of the 3.2 Carrera chip.
