Clean Weber Carburetor Bodies?

Does anyone know of a good dipping solvent to clean carburetor bodies? I've tried 3 different brands of carburetor cleaner. They cleaned off the dirt OK but don't brighten up the metal. Years ago you used to be able to purchase a 2 gallon can of some sort of solvent that made the metal look brand new. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ugh, that stuff stinks and the smell gets on everything and never goes away, I do not recommend Berryman's. Your wife will also hate you if you use it.

On the other hand, it does work extremely well.

I would just recommend a few big cans of Gumout aerosol carb cleaner and some compressed air.

I used Purple Power and a brush to clean mine up. There are still a few small fuel stains but with more scrubbing they'll come off.

you can get a 5 gallon can of carb cleaner (not the same stuff that comes in the can) from napa or maybe advance. i use to soak mine for several days. dont put anything in there with paint on it because it will not have any on it when it comes out. keep the lid on and it lasts for a long time

Solvents will not brighten. Or expressed another way, any chemical that would brighten the pot metal wouldn't be very good for the carbs (acid, etc.)

This is Bieker's work, AD or finer glass bead, like talcum powder, followed by a thorough cleaning. You might be able to achieve the same with Sodium Bicarbonate followed by a vinegar rinse to vaporize the bicarb into C02.

I coated my carbs with Por-15 Pellucid clear. It's not a rust treatment, only a gloss paint.

It goes on like glue and looks great 2yrs later and 20k miles in a salt air environment. I'll dig for a pic if wanted.

Cool Carb cleaning................

In the past, I have found that spray paint stripper and a toothbrush will get a carb body almost perfectly clean. Spray the part, scrub lightly with the tooth brush and wash off immediately. Repeat as necessary. A lot of the discoloration on carbs comes from dried gas. The paint stripper seems to be very agressive at disolving the dried gas. I did a set of (4) carbs on a Corvair 140 hp engine once and later had someone ask where I found the new carburetors! Just be certain to do this outdoors and wear rubber gloves. The paint stripper is not very friendly towards human skin!

Good luck with your project.

does anyone know if the Berrymans carb soak will damage the outside finish on Weber Carbs? I've used it on other carbs and it works great, but I don't really want to remove the yellow finish and be left with the alum. color.
