oil gauge
1981 911sc
What's the best way to read the oil temp. gauge? It's normally just a hair above the line, about the 7PM position. Sometimes it's at the 7:30PM position. Would the engine be considered too hot if the needle was at the 9PM position? It never gets to the red area. Also, where would be a good location to test the oil for the exact temp? Tx! |

IMHO, upgrade to numerical display. It may not be perfectly accurate but at least it adds class.

Ditto. Very easy to do, and well worth it.

wouldn't the gauge with actual numbers be just the same as if i continued to use the old one but pretending that there were numbers on it? by the position of the needle?

If you look way off to the left of the lines you will see the temperature in degrees Celsius.
On mine, the first mark is 90 C = 194 F The second mark says 120 C = 248 F = Too damn hot! (Bruce Anderson). I just extrapolate from there. I have hit the second mark once. It was 108 F out, and I was in traffic. I got moving again, and it barely went below the second mark. Luckily I got home in about another two miles and shut it down.
