What is wrong with this leather boot?
 

Guys

What am I doing wrong? This is a 1984 930 with short shift.
I was told there is a rubber band or something to hold the neck in place. Also, it seems that there is too much leather.
I tried to flip it inside out but the rubber boot inside doesn't give much room...

Could you please provide some instructions, pics... to help me out?

Best to just remove it or have it cut down a bit

The rubber shifter boot should be removed first. Don't use it and then the leather will fit down inside the console opening.

EDIT--DOH!!!! Just realized you have a 930 not a Carerra.

Seems like the shift boot should be installed first, then the center carpet and then the console goes on top?

What am I missing? - I see the rubber at bottom of the leather and it looks fat just like a rubber boot is inside. I was going to say the same thing - remove the rubber.

the comment I deleted was about the shift pattern on the knob.

For the record, the factory installed a rubber boot under the leather. The bottom of both the rubber boot and the leather boot should be under the console, not on top of it.

The top of the leather boot is held up by a metal ring welded to the lever, about a half inch below the bottom of the knob.

That lever looks pretty short, like it has been cut down.

Yes, yes, yes. And to the last comment, you need a new lever. That thing is hacked, damn near in half.

Here you are......rubber inside, leather, and short shifter....I'm sure your's is cut off at least two inches, maybe more.....

Remove the 3 mounting screws (2 on each side and 1 close to the brake lever).

Lift the center console and then pull the leather boot down and over the rubber boot. Flip the excess leather up and tuck it under the sides of the console.

Remount the center console, you may need to pull up the boot to give it some slack so it won't be too tight.

That will clean it up nicely.

I had a hard time keeping my rubber shift boot down over the shifting hub. It kept coming up out of the console, so I finally used a narrow hose clamp to hold the rubber boot down into position. Sometimes it's the little things that makes you really feel good about your car projects...

So Rob, is it just an illusion of sorts, the camera, or is that shifter in fact cut down? I just gotta know! :) Thanks. It doesn't matter, as long as you like the feel, but anyway, good advice above about getting the bases of the boots under the console. My leather used to pop free a bit, but I have it "trained" now, apparently. Your's does look like it'll be a lot better once under there....

when I bought my 930 it had an after market boot and knob. I bought the original knob from the dealer and the original boot I got used. I installed both, didn't notice any work on the lever. I knew it was missing something to hold the neck in place, I didn't know it was a metal ring. Also, I did not manage to get the rubber/leather under the console as I was afraid to damage the leather.
I believe you guys solved the mistery. Actually, the only thing I did not like about my dream car was this far off shifting, which makes it hard to reach 1st and 3rd even though I have long arms. It didn't make sense, we want the lever closer for quick shifting. I was thinking a German engineer missed the boat there, it never occurred to me someone would cut the lever. Do you see any benefit in having the lever far from the driver?

No. The reach shouldn't be an issue, and as I've written before, I have my seat back quite a bit and have no problem reaching any gear. I think you might want to find a local Pelican to check it out maybe. Something sounds amiss, can't tell from the pix. Lar
If the bushings are OK, and the tranny/synchros are solid enough, you should be having nothing but a good time. 1st and 3rd gear should be able to find blindfolded, IMO.

I'm pretty sure they didn't start installing the leather boots until 1985, so your shifter wouldn't have had the metal ring. If you can remove the boot and shoot a picture of the lever from the side, I can tell you if it has been shortened.
