Carrera distributor cap wear
I started getting an occasional miss and stumble at the low end - popped the cap and saw this ... rotor was down tight.... is this common?

I don't know if it's common but I think you found your miss. How's the rotor look?

Might be good to know if these are the replacement "Bosch" pieces made in Spain, Yugoslavia, or wherever. Isn't the center post a bit "Springy"...and does the spring still work?. Does it look like mechanical or electrical distress up-close?.....forensic minds want to know !!.

Not a lot of miles - maybe 12K. I popped in a new one (made in Spain.. not sure about the damaged one) and had a closer look at the old one. The light colored area seems to be where the cap melted as the electricity tried to find a path.
The carbon rod looks like it might have broken off. I'll take a closer look when I can... Anyhow, runs much smoother now... so... new plugs, new cap, can of fuel system cleaner working it's way thru the system... we'll see if I pass smog in the next week or two, or even come close! JB

Distributor cap...
I recently ordered a Beru cap from Pelican for my 3.0 SC, and it appeared to be better finished (made in Germany as well) than the last Bosch (made in Spain) unit I bought.
It's also significantly cheaper (for a Carrera) than the Bosch distributor. |

I had the same problem on my 73S. After a few hundred miles I heard a ticking noise and thought it was a valve tick or a spark plug wire. Turned out that a piece of the carbon rod broke off and was bouncing around. At first I thought that the rotor or cap was not seated properly. Then after a few miles on a new cap and rotor, which was properly seated , I noticed that the rotor had shown a slight meltdown. I have MSD and installed a VW Beetle rotor(Jeff Higgins way) and no problems yet.
