Vintage seats with 5 point harness????

Currently working on my early 71 911 (2.4) for vintage racing.

I was wondering if anyone is using vintage seats with a 5 point harness.
The car will also be street legal and I wanted to keep to a vintage look instead of using more modern seats (ie. sparco, recaro, etc).

Safety and comfort are still a prioirty and I will not use a vintage style seat if it compromises safety.

I would appreciate if anyone has is using vintage seats in a 5 point harness config . I have been looking at seats from www.vintageseats.com and www.classiccarseats.com .

Pictures would be great.

Thanks in advance.

Andy

You need to talk to Dave @ TRE. He has his own line and carries GT seats as well. They have the hole for the sub belt.

+1 for TRE

Dave has his showroom setup with his TRE seats and can provide the knowledge/experience to configure any setup your looking for. He's creating a pair of 911R seats for my project using a shell that he has fabricated . . . better than the original in my opinion.

Best of luck with your search.

Regards,

Many of the vintage seat vendors can offer a hole for 5 or 6 point belts. I'd check with the requirements of the vintage series you intend to race to make sure that they don't require FIA certification, or the equivalent. The vintage seats I've seen aren't legal in a series that requires certified seats. Some may have it, I don't know.

The problem arises if you go backwards into a wall...easy enough to accomplish at two tracks I am familiar with. Here the FIA certification, which addresses this issue, could keep you from serious injury. Alternatively, you may need to consider bracing the seat against your roll bar to prevent it collapsing under these circumstances. Two things to consider here: what does your club require? What is needed to minimize your chance of injury? They may or may not lead to the same answer.

I don't have any idea if this set-up is approved for vintage racing, but this is my set-up (seats and belts) from TRE:

Some repro seats like this fiberglass one below are risky at best, as they have almost no strength in them at all. A Roll bar support with a HEADREST PAD behind the seat & headrest MUST be used.

Another issue is the height of the headrest relative to the driver. This one pictured is more of a backrest.

Tall drivers need a tall seat w the Headrest high enough to support the head.

Even the original seats are not up to today's standards.

Just lean back & see where the "headrest" meets your body.

If you are going to spend those big bucks on improved seats, buy ones that improve your safety as well.

Just my opinion.

Len

While the period correct seat look nice, when I race I'm in a Sparco, also I take the passanger seat out =extra weight, and have a Hans on. I don't care about looking correct, I'd rather be safe on the track.

Andy,

I was faced with the same decision and choose safety over looks for the track...I opted for a Cobra Imola race seat....For the street I will switch out for something more period correct much like Curt's seats...

Thanks for the input everyone.

Curt and Milt...I will definitely take a look at what TRE has to offer.

I will also double check with the regulations.

Thanks again everyone.
