What size speakers??

That fit *properly* on a rear shelf with no bastardizing and cutting... I.e. As original looking and fitting as possible??

Reason I ask is some idiot butchered my car prior to purchase with stoopid size speakers and I so need to reverse this travesty!

TIA!
Kemal.

4x6 metric for European cars. Kenwood makes a pretty good one that fists perfect.

I wish I had a nickel for every question that asks "what was originally in my car" without identifying either the car, or whether it might have had an option that was offered in that era.

Hint, hint...

15x9 might be metric, perhaps in centimeters...

Still, not all 911s had the same thing for rear speakers. So, the question is moot until we know the application. And, not all 4x6 will fit the rear of a car so-equipped. Even the Kenwoods that are supposed to be a drop-in fit...

I've spent a fair bit of time adapting some to an '86 930, and trying to keep the stock grille.

My bad - I have a 87 Carrera with some ridiculous amped up 15x9 cr4p sticking out of the parcel shelf ill-fitting rubbish speakers...

I am trying to ascertain the most powerful speakers (read: amplified) that would fit correctly in the original holes of a new parcel shelf for this car, such that I can maintain (1) the original look as much as possible of the shelf and (2) as low profile as possible i.e. I dont want them poking up too much into the rear window space.

Any better?

First....I don't understand the fascination for Uber stereo systems in a noisy and fully-entertaining capsule like a 911 cockit.....but that's me..... save it for a good brandy at home in front of your entertainement system. For a 911 I need news, weather and some tunes...

Anyway.......

Rear 6x9's need to be shallow, with small magnets ( depth)...and the stock grills often do not work with any non-factory alternates.

I'm with you on that Will, but the stereo in the car has an amp under the passenger seat, so instead of ripping it out I'd rather replace the rears with speakers that can handle the power. (I don't even remember the last time I listened to it, but .....)

In that case, rip the amp out....probably wired wrong with improper fusing and electrical tape anyway ....

.... add lightness.....

Let's say you put in a 4x6, which "fits" the original hole, (maybe)... There isn't a 4x6 speaker made that would give you decent sound, amplified or not. It's just not big enough.

If you have some larger, cr4p speakers there already, and you remove them, will you have any holes or creases visible in your upholstered panel?

Here's what I'd do, if I wanted decent sound. I'd buy a pair of 6.5" component speakers and mount the large drivers in the original holes. You'd have to enlarge the holes, and it would help to move them rearwards, but you could probably do this and cover any imperfections in the upholstery. I'd then make a couple little mounts for the tweeters, that would put them at the intersection of the rear deck and the c pillars, firing forward across the car (left one firng toward the right side, and vice versa). I made a pair of mounts a few years ago that were retained by large U-shaped clips that wrapped around the back edge of the rear deck panel, so no holes had to be drilled.

I'd then do something similar with the doors. In your case, you could emulate the look of the Hi-Fi speaker package that was available in 1987, with a pair of drivers in each door.

You'd have a system that looked pretty good and pretty original. And, it would sound better than the stock crap, which is essentially worthless, unless all you listed to is AM talk radio, or the weather reports.

JR

PS: When it comes to choices in possible speaker locations, a coupe is different from a cab, or a targa.... so I assumed you have a coupe...

Hi there. If you want to maintain the original size and use it for average purposes take a look at the Boston Acoustics S75 (4x6 speaker). I had to put thin insulating strip tape around the speaker edges and then put the grill for a proper/secure fit. Got the insulating strip tape from home depot/lowes.

1+ on original grill not fitting with new speakers

per Wil, grills likely not fit on speakers with heavier (read taller) speaker frame, and/or higher tweeter... i recently installed Boston Acoustics in rear deck of my 88 911 and grills now a tad to small. Will be removing and doing some alteration work with a dremel to hopefully allow the grills to work.

yazhound has it right. I simply wanted to replace the OEM speakers (German ITT units.... total crap)...because the "paper" cone completely disintegrated, like Egyptian parchment that flaked into a thousand pieces.

Fitted generic plastic coned same-size 4 x 6's...and the stock grills didn't fit. Has to use the new ones that came with the new speakers, I *think* because the stand-off was a bit taller, IIRC.

The door units 5.25" size suffered the same parchment paper fate. How Porsche could choose such junk and also at the same time have the temerity to *charge* what they did originally...is simply beyond me and not in keeping with the quality pieces used mechanically elsewhere on the car.

I replaced my failing Blaupunct/ITT speakers with Kenwood 5X7 ($50 a pair) and did a minor amount of filing on the metal mounting plates. Works great but the grills are shot. Do you have a source for grills?

Porsche Crest

I've got an '83 911 SC. Two PO ago installed a set of Alpine 4x6's in the rear deck. Sun damage destroyed the speakers themselves (they disintegrated in my hands as I removed them) and caused the frames to crack and split. I don't have the original speaker covers and none of the 4x6's I've found come with grill covers. I've looked on eBay, but nothing I've seen "feels" right. I'm thinking of trying to use larger speakers that do come with grills and building a custom adapter out of MDF.

The same PO that installed the Alpines in the rear deck also installed 5.25" Boston Acoustics in the doors. The BA's had an adapter plate that gave them greater depth and a square frame. My new Polk's are round and only work with the grill covers that came with them. My problem now is that the PO drilled through door covering to mount the BAs instead of using the existing holes, so I am trying to devise a way to hide the holes without making it look tacky.

After seeing 9ball's great work, I'm thinking of breaking down and doing the same thing. Probably means I'll end up buying new door coverings.

How about a picture of what you DON'T like? It will give us a reference point.
