Body Work : : Welding Question
What would be fair price to have a body shop weld in a 72 oil door on my Carrera.

just a stab... $500-$900 for the actual door install, (he has to gain inner access by removing the oil tank and it's lines) another $900-$1,000 to shoot the quarter panel, and recoat the inner panel.
Add $6,000-$15,000 if you want the paint on the qtr panel to match the rest of the car with a complete respray. If you're doing this to a project car and have the oil tank and lines out - figure $200-300 just to add the door. Bill K

that's a lot more than adding a door. - that's a panel graft.
hopefull one of the experts will chime in with a better ball-park number. the second picture you edited into your first post also includes a ton of fabrication work - in which case ignore my initial stab. also try posting on the paint & bodywork forum. good luck, Bill K

much less invasive to cut out the oil door pocket with a 1 - 1-1/2 inch flange around it and butt weld it in. would be a good days work to get it ready for primer. then prime and paint 1/4 panel and blend onto the door, probably 7-8 hours paint time, plus removing handle, mirror, taillight, 1/4 window and drop the bumper corner.

If I was grafting the 72 oil lid in I would cut the donor panel right down to a section about 3/4 inch around the oil flap opening extending into the door shut area to include the push button release for the flap. That way you will avoid welding the flat panel areas, all your welding is up at the top of the panel where there are some lovely curves in the metal to reduce the effects of panel warping. If you change your mind or have a spare '72 oil tank I have a good home for it in New Zealand, they are very rare here and mine has been brazed up where the rust got at it. (it an ex UK car imported back in about 1986, they lay salt on their roads in winter apparently, not good for 72 911's or their oil tanks longevity) The oil filter housing suffered as well, very pitted but still good thankfully, I bet they are $$$ to replace.

Another thought, there are 3 round swage indents in the inner guard to match the 3 swage mounts on the oil tank. There are 3 plastic bush/spacers to help locate and isolate the oil tank. You should try and copy these perhaps, plus the retaining strap needs to welded into place when you have the guard opened up.
