dont know anything about what program but if it was more something of yahoo.. not something that is reloaded every 25 seconds or something. more like real time.. another idea which i dont know if it will work but what about an icq chat room? where as u type it apears of anyone knows what im talking about.. sorry for knowing nothing about how to make it work just know we need an updated one... no flames just helping if i am at all...

As another member suggested, IRC is a widely used chat system on the net. If you're planning to run a server on a Win32 platform, ircd 2.9.5 is probably suitable (http://www.storer.net/ircd.html). If on *nix, there's a variety of both open source and closed source IRC server programs (http://www.ircdhelp.org/ircdvers.html)
